Hello every body A fter teaching for so many years, I have acquired the habit of telling, ‘do you understand; you got my point? If not ask me again etc. I just don’t know if it is good or bad, lol some times I tell this to my wife and kids.. My wife says, well I am not your student, and this is not your class.... My grand kids say Dadaji ( or Nanaji), this is home, not your college or seminar. My kids keep smiling Each person has some such words, which they utter, so what is yours. You can aloso share about your family members. Welcome. Happy posting, cheers Prof

I remember my college instructor in one subject. He often said "you get the point?" in our classroom discussions. One time, i was so bored that I decided to count how many times he'd say it. I think he said "You get the point" about 15 times during our one hour class.

Hi, Prof. LOL...The words I repeat most include 'OK', followed by 'yes', 'you know', 'thank you'...... And I've noticed that I changed my pet phrases from time to time. Now, most of the young people like to say 'yun'(Chinese), which means 'dizzy', when they found something was boring or ridiculous.

'yun' which meant dizzy. That struck me because I can't find the Filipino version of that to be something we could include in our statements someday. Quite amazing that the youth of different countries dig up new words or new expressions everyday, ain't it?

Yes, especially after the debut of the Internet. You know, thanks to the exposure to information explosion, the youth nowadays learn more and faster than the preceding generations. Therefore, they are able to think up a great number of new words and come up with a lot of new ideas. There are much more that I'm unable to name all here. Such funny things!

it seems that you have forgotten you are at home now and no longer giving lecture in college. Yeah, I understand that it would take quite some time to shake away the habit which has been sticking to us for such a long time. No wonder you still utter the same words that you were use to say before at home. I was cultivated to say thank you and sorry according to the situation since childhood. Might be I'm getting old and too used to it I even say thank you after I have done something for someone. Once I a passer-by stepped on my foot accidentally I uttered out "sorry" and he stared at me amazingly and returned a "sorry" as well. Of course my hubby and son burst out laughter then and never asked whether my foot was pain or not Happy posting!

people are more than willing to hear I say thank you more than to see me glaring at them I suppose, though they are actually the people who should say sorry in certain situation. Really, sometime saying some meaningless words will give us a short while to think of what to say the next moment

I think it is physical reflection that you would like to repeat some words as it is easy to speak out and it is suitable for any situation. Sometimes I am the same as you that I would say Thank You no matter I got help or I provide the service. The frequency of Thank You is much higher than that of You Are Welcome. Studying the language is very interesting. The humors may occur if we did not think too much before we speak out. I am been a teacher for one year and I am used to say" Ok, then" as a connection of blank concept, just in case my next idea is a little late to speak out.

Hi, Professor2010. I use the word "pretty much", a whole lot. Sometimes, I hear myself say it so many times in a conversation. It annoys me. I am trying so hard to break this habit. I find myself saying these words so much.

I can totally relate. I say "sorry" a lot even when it does not apply! especially when I am about to ask a question, almost like I feel like sorry for disturbing you with my question. hehe I also say "You feel me?" or "You catch my drift"? I guess these phrases we use are like feelers and they help us complete your sentences. We just have to be careful not to over do it.

When I was in the high school, our math teacher often said " As for this,...", and all the students would burst into laughter for hearing he said "as for this...", at the first few days. But later, no one would laugh, because we were all used to it.

When I was in college, I have a teacher who keeps on saying "nuh" almost every after a paragraph, and I had a classmate too who keeps on keeping a tally of it whenever she mentioned the word. The phrase that I keep on repeating too is "did I make myself clear?" Of course my students would say "yes"... :-) So far I have never been experienced when someone says "no". Maybe they are just hesitant or maybe they said no but only at my back. :-))

Well, at this point of time in my life, I'm the mother to two younger children, so there are a lot of things that I have to say over and over. The most promient one is "I said No!" It seems like with the children when you tell them no that means that they are supposed to continue doing that thing which they weren't supposed to be doing in the first place. Then there is the "Didn't you hear me?" Another that goes right alongside the saying no.

Funny of you. When we get used to saying such words, sentences, etc., they just effortlessly come out from our mouths without really being conscious about it. Mine would be 'you know what I'm saying?' when I finish talking about some things..:)

Just check yourself at the door! It can be quite condescending to individuals who are not taught be you. A change of clothing when you get home may be a great idea, it can get you out of work mode and perhaps relax a little, although I do agree speech habits are hard to break.. Keep Cool Prof!

Hehehe.. I have also been teaching and training people, I noticed (and so did they) that I use the word 'actually' and 'basically' too many times in one session. It's really quite annoying and I would want to take that habit out. I could recall way back in my Toastmater's days (though I didn't stay long), they used to count these stuff and tell you after your speech so as to let you know that you really are overdoing it with the words. Now that we're talking about it, it's actually happening in mylot as well. I find myself using several words in every post. I don't think most people would recognize or look into it, but I would know because I've realized that I have the same pattern in my responses. I guess I need TypingMaster's hehehe this time - a newly coined word for this topic.

Ha!ha!ha! That is a funny anecdote dear! You made me laugh. You know what we really sometimes forget to remove the role we are playing at work when we are already home. Even me, sometimes my husband gets offended because I act as like as I was in the office. It was as if I was commanding all the time and during these times I know he felt quite dominated. So I am really very, very careful now. I don't actually have any redundant words in particular but it is the way I talk that sometimes offend him. Well, I'm glad I know how to discern when my husband feels bad already so I had to say sorry immediately.

I used to work at a company where we got many collect long distance calls. We were required to ask the operator to call back and give us time and charges for each call. One night at home, I received a collect call and without thinking, I asked the operator for time and charges. It was my MOTHER-IN-LAW calling. Since we were not on the best of terms at the time, that little incident added another nail to my coffin. She thought I did it on purpose and never forgave me.

Good Morning dear Professor2010 , well i cann say that first off all you have a great familly that knows that your intentions ( when asking them if they understand , or if they got your point )are purely there to make them a little bit more sure that you have sorted out well the point you meant to make , how ever in my familly as i am not a professor such as yourself , whenever i put them or asked them if they got my point or understand what i mean to say ( if i keep repeating that ) , at the first question they all understand ( at least thats what they say ) so if i double check , they might think that i am considering them stupids and they start backfirring at me , tellin' yeah yeah , big deal ...everybody knows that ( aparently not everyone lol) Well ever since , i try to evoid giving my familly iof my friends "Lessons" , cause they might think i try to show off and they dont like that ( lowl) Hzave a nice day dear Professor2010

hello professor. i too am in the teaching profession and i would catch myself saying "actually" and "usually" too many times during a lecture. i am trying to cut back from using these words; i am aware that students do count the number or times their teacher utters certain words (i did it too when i was a student) :)
