Well it does require both things that is reading and confidence to speak so reading loudly is better than reading silently.apart form it if you start talking English with your friends and family it will increase your confidence slowly slowly and then one day you will be able to speak on stage or in give interview in English. So start at home first.

Yeah, common_man is right. It depends. If you read good english, your english will get better, but if you are reading bad english, then you will acquire bad english too!

Absolutely. Reading is an activity with multiple benefits. First, it enriches your vocabulary. Try to consult a dictionary for unknown words and learn to use it. Second, it enhances your comprehension. The more you read, the easier you'll find it to understand english articles or literature. Third, it helps you improve writing. Of course, you should have such an awareness while reading that you want to learn something from it, such as the selection of dictions and the writing techniques. All the above advantages must base on the fact that you choose the right material. Literature works are best to improve english in various ways. Don't resort to those banal novels from which you can't learn much.

hi jun ellen, yes you have to read a lot of books to strengthen your vocabulary. when i was little, my mother gave me books and i kept them to please her. i tried reading them but i cant really understand the stories easily especially since english is my second language only.. but as time passes you'll definitely see progress. good luck!

hi junellen,
I can say that reading is the best way for me to make my english better but then it is a case to case basis. Some people feel bored in reading books, magazine or any reading materials. They learn English more by means of watching American movies with captions. Some people just learn more on English by means of music. Once they are interested in music, they look for its lyrics. When they found that there is some words that they do not understand, then that is the time they become curious on it and then learn what is it and associate it with their every day conversations. Some people learn English by means of games. That is more enjoyable. And some learn more of English by means of talking to other people using English as their native language.

Reading english will certainly improve your skill at reading and writing in it. And as long as you read stuff that is decently punctuated and spelt it will hel;p in that area too. If there is a particular area of english you are interested in you should try to get some books on that topic.

Yes.. we can improve our vocabulary in english when we read the english newspapers or novels.. but, we cannot improve english speaking skills unless we talk in english with other people..
Reading english is very good. so that we can learn more and more words and can learn about new formation of sentences in english...

yes, it is true. as an english as a second language speaker and a teacher of this language reading english books might help. however, since i also have a flair for writing in this second language of mine, the only difference i noticed that i did differently when i was growing up was i would read aloud. it does make a difference when one gets to hear the english words. also re-reading books is a nice way to maximize learning english through readings since little words like the prepositions and conjunctions are engraved in the brain. this is where mistakes happen.

For me, reading is a very good way to improve your skills in English. There are so many things to learn from when you read cause it will help you improve on your grammar and also vocabulary. Reading aloud can also help. I teach English as a second language online and I always encourage my students to always encourage them to read.

yup! not only does reading get you to learn and be exposed to different words, it also helps you with grammar, sentence building, and well, writing too.
aside from helping learning English it also helps the mind/brain active and exposes you to different ideas and all. overall, reading really is a good way of learning and exercising the mind.

Reading definitely helps you build your vocabularies, but if the words are hard for you to understand or pronounced, I suggest go onto Dictionary.com and type down that word and press on the pronunciation icon. That's how I try to better my English. I would repeat it over and over until I'm able to pronounce it. I know that there are compact dictionary translator gadgets out there, but I find that the voice is not always clear.
If you're surrounded by those who speaks English, then I would also suggest for you to try to communicate in English. A person to person conversation is a powerful tool in strengthening your pronunciation.
If you like watching movies, then downloading English movies that are subtitled in your language would also help. I watch a lot of Korean and Japanese drama and I read the subtitles are in English, eventually I started to recognized words that were spoken in the film.
There are various methods, really. Just try the ones that you're most interested in!
