Losing your sense

We are all born with five different senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste and Touch (although there are some people that are born without one or more of these basic senses).
If you had to give up one of your senses, which do you think that you would give up and why would you chose to lose that specific sense?
For me, I think I would give up the sense of touch. The reason that I think I would give up this one is that in my life it seems that this sense isn't nearly as important as the other four senses. Over the course of our lives our skin tends to become tougher so that sense isn't as acute as it was when we were very young.
Thank you very much for sharing your view.

hell0 Doran! well, it is really hard to decide because they all five are really very important to me and to all of the people, especially the first two. I think that I will choose between the smell and the tasty, because as I think, I really don't use my nose that much and tasty- well, i like food and it would be really hard to summon eating without having any taste, but I guess that i would feel much much badly if I lose my sight, sound or touch( by the way how can we lose touch? it sounds a little bit strange to me )

The only ways that I could think of that you would lose your sense of touch would be due to nerve damage or burns. It wouldn't be nice getting there, but I think that really would be the sense that I would miss the least.

Most days I'd be perfectly happy without being able to hear! LOL My kids are always so loud, and normally someone is crying over some minor infraction, so not being able to hear all that would be such a blessing, lol.
But in all honesty I rely on my hearing for so much. I don't normally keep an eye on my kids.. but I always have an ear on them so I know what's going on. I never let them go so far away from me that I can't hear them. And like most moms when the arguing and crying isn't audible that's when it's time to go look and see what's going on.
I guess I'd rather live without a sense of taste. If I couldn't taste the delicious food then it would be easier to only eat what my body needs and not give in to fatty treats.

There are a lot of times that I wouldn't mind not being able to hear for the same reasons that you've listed. However, there are also a lot of things that I want to hear. I guess it wouldn't be an all bad thing to lose my sense of taste, but I couldn't imagine never tasting a delicious (insert favorite food here) again in my life.

Right now I am trying to lose some weight. So I might be willing to give up taste. Then food would just be for fuel. Not a source of pleasure and I might reach my goal easier if I couldn't taste.

It seems that a lot of people would be willing to give up their sense of taste. I personally couldn't begin to imagine what it would be like to never taste my favorite food again.

I think I would give up my sense of smell. Taste would be a close second. The other three senses are very important to me. I don't know what life would be like if I couldn't hear music anymore, couldn't see to read books, and couldn't feel a fuzzy blanket. I can imagine never being able to smell anything and never being able to taste again. It wouldn't be so bad. I think I could learn to go without.

Smell may not be too bad of a sense to lose. As far as taste goes, it would be really, really odd for me to lose that sense.

At first thought it seems that it would be easy to loose your sense of smell, but I think about all the important things that we might smell in our lives. I know that I would feel awful if something were to happen to my family because I wasn't able to smell smoke or something like that.

The odd thing is I don't think that we would really realize what we would be missing until that sense is actually gone.

If I had to lose one sense it would have to be my sense of taste. I couldn't bear to lose any others because I want to hear, see and hold my children every day. It would also be a great excuse for me to give up thiose delicious cakes and pizza's so In would probably lose a lot of weight too, plus I would still have my smell sense so i could get a good idea what my food tasted like from that.

Sometimes it really makes you wonder. The senses are so intertwined, what would it really be like to have to live without one of your five senses?

Hi Dorannmwin! Sometimes I would also think about the same question and I would always think that losing sight and hearing are the most difficult thing to happen. I couldn't imagine without seeing and hearing my children's voices. If I would have to choose I think I can manage to lose sense of taste or touch. I wouldn't be very happy not to taste the wonderful flavor of our food. I'm such a fan of good and delicious food and I'll be missing it a lot. But I think I can lose a great amount of weight because of this. With the sense of touch I wouldn't be able to feel heat, cold and pain. It could be a little dangerous but if you will have to be extra careful then I think it is also manageable. Between the two I'd rather lose maybe my sense of taste. Oh it's difficult Dorannmwin.

I really think that no matter what sense we would have to lose, there would be a lot of compromise that would have to go on in our lives.

hi dorannmwin I am with you if I had to give up a sense it wo uld be the sense of touch as all the others are so important, I did think about smell but give that up and a lot of our food would be tasteless. As
smell goes with taste a lot of times. Also going for a walk in the spring would be a lot less fun if you did not smell the night blooming jasmine, the jacaranda trees, and some other flowers that have sweet scents. so it would be touch for me. It is not quite as necessary as the other four
for me.

I am so glad to see that I am not the only person that would be willing to give up my sense of touch. Thank you for sharing.

Of the two senses that you've had dulled in your life, which one of them do you think is the hardest to be without, or have dulled in your life?

Hi Dorann,
i think for it will be my sense of taste. I've had enough of delicious food in my life. i am fine wit water or anything and not have any taste for it. at least i still have the sense of smell to appreciate the food. it's enough for me. i feared losing my sense of sight, hearing, smell and touch. i always love to hehar, see and feel my kids. for me there's always power in touch.
this is a cool discussion friend!

There is power in touch, but then there is also power in all four of the other senses. I really couldn't imagine having to go without any of them, but it seemed that it would be interesting to see what other people would be willing to give up.

I've often thought about this . . . and really, I think I would miss any of them if they weren't apart of me anymore. But if I had to give it up, I think for me, I would give up my sense of smell . . . because my sense of smell isn't great to begin with anyway. I remember when I was pregnant both times, my sense of smell really heightened like never before - and I didn't particularly enjoy having a keen sense of smell (really made me nauseous).

Isn't that the truth of the matter when you are pregnant. There were so many things that would make me sick when I was pregnant because of the way that I preceived them to smell during that time.

when this thing happens to me, in case, i would rather lose my sense of taste for me to eat everything. I can still see if it is rotten or in good condition, i can smell it if it is with poison or not and most of all i can still hear and can feel that somebody loves me and care for me through their sense of touch.
But i know, i have to thank God for the most beautiful blessing and gifts that He has given to us and that is the wholeness of me and the unique me in the world. I thank him for he formed me---complete.

Any of the senses would be difficult to lose, but I really couldn't imagine loosing any of the senses that deal with my head. I just find that I depend on those four senses more than I do on the sense of touch.

I completely agree that it would be quite difficult to have to lose one of our senses. It wouldn't be something that would be fun at all.
