Tough Love or Total Embarrassment?

When I watch American Idol and see how confident some singers are, I am constantly let down by one simple fact: they don't have any talent! Yet, all too often they're prompted to go onto the show by family and friends who tell them how wonderful their singing is. And that got me thinking.
When should we be honest? If someone is truly awful - and their voice has the same pitch as a cat being tortured - then don't we have a responsibility to crush their dreams before they do it themselves on national television?

its kind of a catch 22.. like if you are honest you may kill their self esteem on that issue and then other things but yet you dont want to like give them false hope.. if i was a friend of a person that wanted to be a singer i would try to support them and maybe try to get them to do local things like karaoke or perform at small local places and not push them to AI.. i figure that maybe they could get some feedback on a low level from the other places and constructive criticism NOT on national TV.. then maybe they would either get a clue or maybe they would figure out how to improve
