I hope it entirely depends upon one's interest in selecting these qualities and being comfortable with those persons who could go well with us. Moreover some do go well with those who have common sense and it is also seen some go well with those who are educated well. May be if a person who is higly educated having better common sense is much prefered. But when an option come to select only one quality either common sense or high education may be I would prefer common sense.

I prefer someone with a common sense cuz education can be attainable by someone with a common sense but common sense can't be attained that easy. I think it can't be attained at all if your mental stability had been, well, unstable.. :)

Nope. Not really. There are smart people who know nothing but read books but they don't really know how to work their way around stuff. I know someone smart. He has a very high iq but his common sense is, may i say, not tolerable. :)

no matter what level of education...common sense is natural. no offense meant but it's still not the highest level of education for me that matters...

I agree with you, all of us have a common sense but not all of us knows how to use it. But of course if we speak of high education, we need to specify it, is it Phd? Cause if it is Phd then i guess i go for the educated ones cause a person will not reached that level if he doesn't have a common sense.

a person with common sense beats a highly educated person.all of life's greatest lessons aren't taught in schools.life's greatest lessons are taught in real living thru experiences.a person with common sense thinks about his actions and the consequences of it.he will not rely on theory, but will rely on good thinking.

hi shamrack,
In my opinion, Much preferred a person with a common sense than a highly educated person. In this virtual world, person who are highly educated for some cases tend to be more dominating to the point they are able to forget the very important basics about life and that is Being true human beings. they rely their lives more on theoretical based thinking which can counteract any way of life. Sometimes their views about life exceed in a more expectations far beyond a person can meet and possibly can result in more complicated way that person around them of lesser knowledge may be under estimated or have lack that confidence to freely speak about their thoughts due to the superiority notions as highly educated people. Chances are either the people around them will adjust greatly to meet his demands or better yet remain as passive they can to avoid any unwanted problems. Series of Social interactions for these person requires person of the same thinking level who can adapt in same environment like them.Without even knowing that due to their high standards, they are dependent to others giving practical services to provide them. Therefore, application for common sense level for them may either be less or lack at all.
However, a person who apply life with a common sense, does not require many requisitions to live in life. They are those who live normally about life. They are more on hands-on type of person but do manage to find many alternative ways in facing life works. This are people who are practical in thinking and can alter different strategic activities that will make them achieve their goals smoothly. Without any competition from anybody else, no great expectations, no much of theoretical thinking and able to adapt more freely with the environment in which community he belongs.
There are many instances that people who uses their common sense are best for any practical situations in life. With their experiences, they are able to manage life in ways they are best viewed in practicality and humanely. Often, they can respond easily in quick decision on solutions from unwanted problems, they decide fast, and alertness based on what they actually see. They are Motion Action People. Very well tested in many emergency cases.
Contrasting for those highly educated people, before they manage to give a solution in a certain problem, they go through many series of thinking leading them to lack of time or too much burden of sleepless nights before they react and act. They are Thinking Motion People.
happy mylotting..

I would have to go for someone with common sense. Individuals with common sense tend to use it, educated people I guess use what they learned in college and that does not always apply to simple things. I have seen this in Jamaica so many times where the educated is put to shame by the uneducated person that used their common sense. Case in point, I bridge had washed away in a hurricane and a temporary bridge was put in its place made of metal. A gentleman came by who knew nothing about building bridges or engineering and told them that the bridge will be washed away because it was not supported. The Prime Minister was there and told him that he doesn't know what he is talking about. In a few months later we had more heavy rains from a hurricane and the bridge collapsed as was predicted by the man who used his common sense.

College degree is not a high education then i guess i will go for common sense, but when we speak of high education it means it already reaches the highest degree and it is Phd, then i guess i will go for PHd, remember an individual cannot reach that level of education if he/she doesn't have a common sense cause studying those level of education is very complex even if an individual is only beginning to pursue it what more to finish it.

I much prefer people with common sense than highly educated people because sometimes with higher IQ might misinterpret and put it in a more complicated manner. rather that people with common sense, just keep your conversation on the right track. also it i find highly educated people boring, sorry for that.

Hi, SHAMRACK. I would rather a person have more common sense. They can understand situations much better. And they can relate to many things. A person that is too highly educated, in my book, is too smart. They can be so smart until they are just plain old dumb! They may think that they know it all. I would rather deal with a person that has common sense than them being highly educated.

i'd prefer a person with common sense most of the time, but highly educated ones are especially useful when you wanted to learn something new. it's just that during ordinary days when you simply wanted to chill out or do away from your daily life toxins, a too smart person is EXTREMELY annoying or maybe i'm mistaking them from know-it all people. anyway, they're both too smart.^_^

Sometimes, it's surprising that some highly intelligent people lack common sense. Common sense usually is developed through experiences, practical applications of what we learn in our day to day living. You don't learn it through books.
I guess I would rather stick with people with common sense than intelligent ones who seem to have a world of their own. I don't mean to generalize however.

Hi there, it really depends. But if to choose only from those two? I'd rather go with the common sense, having a high education doesn't mean that an individual also have a very good E.Q. and can critically think well. Sometimes high education is just an achievement but with that education we are not sure if he performed well or did not.
Some people with high education or let's say those who actually reached a Master's degree somehow lacking of EQ. But if you will ask me to choose between a Phd and a common sense, then i go for the one with Phd, cause people will not even finish that degree if he/she doesn't have any common sense.
In looking for a manager in a company it is much better to look for a person who knows how to think critically, handle situations and with EQ, people with good EQ have good common sense.
The high education that you are telling is very general, maybe if you can break it down to a specific level or let's say a much more detailed information then you can get a straight answer.
And of course choosing people for work, i guess we can go for highly educated ones, cause in the field, common sense is not the only tool but also the knowledge and the capability to think and contribute for the organization.
If i am to choose a friend from a suburbian community, i go for common sense. If i where to choose a real friend, i go for a person with a Phd. Cause a people with that level of education have the qualities that we are looking for, and a person with that level, just like what i have said earlier, will not reach that kind of level if he/she doesn't have a common sense.
Hope you get my point. Thank you and a very interesting discussion.

I think that when a person is highly educated, she/he will be naturally charged with common sense UNLESS she/he thinks that other than her/his own opinion is not worth listening to then his common sense is often clouded by his stupidity.
To make a long point short, be humble.

Its just that I have met someone who is highly educated and is confronted and clearly that highly educated person is in the wrong but because he thinks that his high education is above a wise elderly man, refuses to admit his mistake. its sad.. his common sense is clouded by his stupid ego.

Hi momof3kids,
as I read here, you understand this point inverted than I do. Common sense is something you can't learn (or you have it, or you never will learn it), but a highly educated person recieved education, studied a lot...but, if a highly educated person hasn't got common sense? So he or her is still not stupied because he studied?

Hi, SHAMRACK.
I consider it a half-half situation. It reminds me of street smarts vs. book smarts. I'm not sure but I think characters, rather than the qualities of common sense or high education, have a strong effect on my preference for someone with whom I can get along well.

High education is something you can reach through the years by studying, reading and preparing yourself. Common sense: or you have it or you never will reach it! So I rather prefer a person with common sense because those persons are more practice in live, they usually have no problems to resolve situations in live and if they want to, they can learn and study everything they want and need.

Highly educated but zero common sense? Nah--who would want that. I thought common sense improves by the degree of one's education. I think a person who has common sense will have better survival rate that than those who only have diplomas and degrees which they could always buy.

I have no preference for both - because both are intelligent in their own levels.
Both can do wrong at times. It depends.
In my experience there are occasions where commonsense person can handle the situation better than an highly educated person. And vice verse.
Hence, I just take a chance and try if successful then OK. If failed even then - OK.

As for me I consider highly educated persons boring when it comes to a simple conversation. Because when I am talking to them I can't be myself, I can't say what I really want to say because im afraid I might say the wrong word, the wrong term in a wrong time.I always think of the best word to say and it is very hard.
