All I've ever wanted to do is write fiction but I have a problem. I can think of plenty of stories to write but when it comes to committing it to paper I freeze up. Absolutely nothing comes out. I can hear the story in my mind but it's like it just doesn't want to come out. Any ideas that can help me with this dilemma?

I have that problem too sometimes, the best thing to do is just to cough it up. Write down whatever comes to mind even if it doesn't sound good. You can edit something bad, but you can't edit a blank page. Great ideas are worth absolutely zip if you don't write them down. If you have an idea of some scene that comes later but you don't know how to begin, go ahead and skip to the part you know what to write. You don't have to write in a straight line. You can always come back to certain parts you get stuck at later.

I often have the same problem. I have the story in my head, but when I am supposed to write it down I can't seem to get started. I sit down and try to get started, but for some reason nothing happens and I feel stuck. I usually try to do something else for a while, for instanse read or write something else, I guess I try to make myself believe that it will be easier to continue with the story after a break, but I don't think that it works that well. I think that one of the problems is that I am too critical, and I am not satisfied with the things that I write. I think have to learn to become less critical.

Try doing what I just started. Try writing a journal. I'm finding that just by putting my daily thoughts on paper it helps. I'm still stuck right now but maybe in the end it'll be a help with my regular writing. Give it try it can't hurt anything. Do any of the rest of you use journals to keep yourself writing. What do you do when you find yourself blocked?

I have the same problem, I love poetry however when I come to write it down it just doesnt come out and sounds awfull. I think when you have something in your head you can think about how it should sound and you can think about it for ever but as soon as you come to put it on paper you become critcal of what you are coming out with when it is written in black and white. My partner has always told me to carry a book around with me so that when I do think of something I write it down as soon as it comes to me and even if it makes no sense when you write it down after a couple of weeks of doing this you will have the best ever story unfolding in front of you without even knowing you have done it. Try not to think about it to much and I hope I have been able to help in some way.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll try doing it. I do have a problem wsith thinking everything I write is kind of blahzie. I guess I need to learn not to be so critical of myself and write it no matter what. Thanks!

Hi ShadowWalker, I wonder if you want to write a brief outline before you start the actual writing. I think you can even write a short story, and lengthen into a long story. At least you can see to the end of the story, before adding in the action and the dialogue.

I used to write outlines but I found them to be too constricting. My preference is to start writing and let the story go where the characters take it.
