Disclaimer : My intentions are not to offend just to get honest responses .lol.
My mother says that is not proper etiquette but it is so convenient to use dont you think.I mean what could be more natural than opening up that envelope and laying a nice layer of moisture and then sealing that envelope and later or before applying the same treatment to that stamp?
Come on be honest

Hi ronnyb, I can say nowadays I rarely send letter via post. For I always keep in touch with loved ones and friends by sending emails. I know it's indecent for an adult to seal the envelope with saliva in the office or before someone. It's unhygienic to seal the envelopes with saliva as well. I tell the kids don't seal envelopes in this way. I'm afraid that they might get the chemical substances which is not good for the health if doing the licking frequently
I was used to this during the time when I was young. Yeah just for the sake of convenience. After putting the content into the envelope, I licked the part of the envelope to make the glue available there wet enough to seal the envelope tightly. It's really handy eh....
Happy posting!

I used to use saliva but nowadays there is not often the need to because the envelopes and stamps come with the glue and a strip that once removed permits the paper to stick. If the stamp or envelope do not have the ready glue I will use a wet sponge instead of my tongue because the idea and the taste put me off these days!

I used to do this when I was younger until I grew up and realized how eeky that habit is!
I have deep respect for paste or glue now, you know!
But I don't bother much with envelopes anymore. Thanks to emails and textS!

Never. I think it is so disgusting and we don't even know what's in there. Why should we lick it. besides, in my country, some envelop types has their own sticky glue attached. so we just need to remove the sealing paper to stick the envelop. while some other which i believe is the type that you refer to is just need to use water or saliva to seal it. I would rather use water then saliva.
fyi, i have ever received an email about this issue to use saliva in sealing envelop. Without being noticed, there is actually some eggs of bugs there which is transferred to his body.

I try to find other ways to seal envelopes than with saliva. Sealing with your own tongue is a last resort. it is not an attractive sight to see, Also it can leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. Alternative means are so much better all the way around.

OK, let me be honest with you. I don't use saliva for sealing envelopes. That's too disgusting for me. It reminds me of a song with the title "Sealed with a kiss". I just can't imagine sending anyone a mail sealed with lots of my saliva, or vice versa, receiving a mail sealed with someone's saliva. I believe self-adhering envelopes are easily avaliable in any stationery stores. They may cost more than ordinary envelopes, but they certainly come in handy when you need to post a mail but do not have glue with you.

I think people are just too lazy to get it done the proper way, you know. Just licking it and give it a little pat, that ought to do it already, right?
But honestly I hardly find myself doing that, coz who knows what kind of germs n bacterias might be crawling over there.
Ive heard a case where a guy who licked the seal and later on finds out that his tongue was decaying!!
The cause of it turned out to be a group of Amoebas which happen to be lying right there along the seal, when he licked it. gross

Yes, that is very convenient. Most stamps in the usa are now self adhesive. Some envelopes are too. I think the envelpoes are not as strong when sealed with self adhesive. May be easy for anyone to open. Like say a theif trying to get your check on the way to pay a bill. Its a flop idea for envelops in my opinion.

When I was younger I use to see my neighbors do that, seal envelopes with saliva but my parents use water so that is what I use. But I think using water is not that effective so we use paste . I think it has been years since I use water or paste to seal an envelope since all I do now is email. Oh well technology...

I prefer not to use saliva if I am honest with you as I find it quite dirty. Plus I once heard a horrifying story of someone that licked an envelope that had worm eggs on it because it was so old and dirty. I generally use a glue stick of even sellotape if I have to.

When I was still small, I seal envelopes using saliva. At that time I didn't know that we can use a glue or something. I thought that it was magic. LOL! Now? I no longer do that. There are several ways to seal an envelope.
