John Terry

Well the guy has had some 'off the field' issues this season and injuries which have maintained a rotation in the center of the England defence with Rio doing the same.
Personally i wouldn't start him for England just because of his past and reputation or because he is now fit. This season he has looked decidedly average. I don't think he's had the same command of the defence for Chelsea or England that we have seen in the past.
Despite the style of the rout yesterday over Stoke, the defence looked alot more solid and together than they have with Terry playing. Chelsea had been looking a little shakey at the back in recent weeks. Giving away fouls and poor marking. Bolton, a team who could be considered in the same level as Stoke, were only beaten by 1 goal and having watched the game i thought Chelsea were lucky on many occasions, with Terry seemingly all over the place.
His performance against Spurs was awful, conceded penalty, carded, red carded.
For England he's looked disorientated at times. When Rio has been sidelined, the player deputising has looked more in control than Terry, such as Upson and Lescott (although Lescott is another who haphazardly fouls around the box).
So what does everyone else think? Has Terry gone off the boil? Should he been an automatic choice for England?

Chelsea looking shaky ???..almost every team is looking shaky . OFF THE FIELD MATTERS should not be give importance in my opinion . This Terry lad huge experience and skill in him . I think he should have remained as England captain . The things which happened to him are personal issues . What does it have to do with football ? I can't understand what are people going to get if they remove him as the England captain . He is a great leader and a deffender too . His sliding tackles are awesome . Though I support Asrenal ..I love terry for his awesomness in the field . By removing terry from the captaincy for a guy who does not even make to the bench is foolishness . This is just going to de-boost the morale of the team and TERRy. This was just my opinion ..HAPPY mylotting and have a nice day !

Thanks for your response. I'm not suggesting the off-field stuff is to blame, nor do i disagree he has been a great leader and defender. Judging on his recent performances he hasn't been great at either and thats on the field. I'm unsure as to your bench comment, if you mean defenders who replace him; neither Lescott nor Upson are bench players for their respective clubs and if you mean captaincy, the likes of Rio and Gerrard are not bench players either.
Have a nice day

I referred to Bridge as a bench player..It was because of Bridge that he was removed from Captaincy !!!

from his most recent performance, i guessed hes back in form. Sportmen all over the world will suffer from bad patches from time to time. So i guessed its normal for him to be off-formed, his scandals have affected him bad as we can see on wayne rooney.

Hi Matthammer,
I agree that John Terry performance with Chelsea this season is not the best from him. Injuries and off-field issues MIGHT be the reason for this even though it is hard to prove it because he can play better in one game but his performance dropped at the next game.
I am not a fan of John Terry nor Chelsea but I think he is among the best defender (central) that England can have now in term of experiences and work rates. And I believe every team want him at their at their paying sheet.
He is a tough tackling defender and he would do anything (sometimes a silly thing) to prevent their opponent to have a shoot on goal. And that is his job as a defender. I think all defenders did conceded a penalty or being red carded at a time or another. And most of it (if not all) were a stupid fouls. That is among their job and I think every manager want their defender be an aggressive.
Of course they were a few other defenders that can play at the central but they did not have John Terry quality or work rates. They were to inexperience when its come to a big game like World Cup. It is important to have someone who can give a command and control the other defenders and John Terry has that quality.
I think John Terry has every thing to be consider as an automatic choice for England. So far, he has done a good job for England and I believe he still has a lot of thing to be offered. We should look at the on field affair rather then off field affair to make a decision on who is playing and who is not. And I believe each and every players has their own black book.
