That depends on how you define the word "successful". Everyone has their own definition. Come to think of it, what many people want is basically happiness, be it becoming the richest businessman, the top scholar in university, or simply being able to provide a decent living for the family and education for the kids. Because to be successful will bring about happiness, they go for it.

Everyone wants to be successful to get self fulfillment and satisfaction, otherwise your life is meaningless.
