Etymology -- meaning of words. According to the etymology of DOCTOR -- the one word which most of us consider with very high RESPECT is .... " to deceitfully alter .. "
is it not surprising? The modern meaning of course is about someone who practices medicine. Or Doctor is a one with highest degree of education, etc.
But, ask anyone of their personal opinion. Doctor is one who gives you some technical jargon and confuses you, and writes down a few pages, after poking you with funny needles and wires, etc..
what you say?

Well as we all know, to deceitfully alter mostly pertains to documents..."He doctored his final report paper". Sarcastically it could also be applied to medical doctors who takes advantage of his profession. Some doctors think they're some kind of god...you have to follow what they say. I don't trust most of them...cause they get a certain percentage of money everytime they prescribe medicine and sometimes the patient doesn't even need that and this kind of meds. Tricky....what a shame.

what a shame. truly. ever heard of hysterectomy operation done on unmarried 18 year girls, (removal of uterus, the childbearing organ of females) -- just because the girls report to have pain before or during menstruation? .. and that they are uneducated and poor? ... It happens in rural India, for claiming the state medical reimbursement and bills paid by insurance agencies.
how shameful? how inhuman? ...

ha! you got my point dear friend. All these modern day study-patterns, schooling, parenting, etc.. have forced us to choose DOCTORs to be medical practitioners and by itself it became a richly yielding career choice.
If you do not mind me quoting old scriptures from INDIA, .. I have a copy with me, translated from guidelines to select a partner for your daughter which explicitly warns the groom-seeker to avoid any such doctor OR medical practitioner , as they used to live outside the villages, near some hills or forests. And, these olden day practitioners used to be UNCLEAN. At least, as per the quoted book.
Good luck, and my respects to you for responding in a resolved topic. It shows you are a veteran here.

There are doctors and doctors. Right now I am happy with my family general practioner. He is young, he has qualified from University a few years ago. He is bubbly, always have time for you and is respectful, kind and patient towards his patients. He has all the ingredients to make him a popular person. Besides that he is knowledgeable and he is there to give you advice how to lead a healthy lifestyle. When I had done the cholesteroal blood results he was the one to give me advice on what to eat and what to avoid

As you probably know a lot of English words come from Latin roots. I learnt that the word doctor comes from the Latin root "doceo I teach"

thankyou. YES. As I also searched the roots of the word, DOCTOR could also be associated with the meaning of teaching.
But, the british/european meaning which made the word popular is still, to deceitfully change or alter.
like, "the documents are doctored by the culprit."
