Lost or stolen?

On my way home tonight I stopped to visit my mum. She didnt look well but assured me she was ok. Then she told me that she'd been shopping and had either lost her credit card, bank card, bus pass and some money - or had them taken from her bag She is always very careful to fasten her bag but, when she went to use the card, the zip was partly undone & the cards were gone. She has reported all of them as missing to the appropriate establishments. Fortunately she acted very quickly so they have all been cancelled. Thankfully, if someone did take them, at least they did her no physical harm in doing so.(A bit sad that we actually think along those lines isnt it?) I think she's dealt with it better than I would have done bless her. Have you had the hassle of having to cancel your cards?

Hello! Nope not yet. But I had some "wonderful" experiences with robberies and the Romanian "authorities". Having 3 robberies in less that a month really is a record. And how the cops responded? Well... I would prefer not to comment on the stupidity of the Romanian Police... Just today I saw a case in which A cop shot a little boy because he was listening music too loud. And he got a small part of the sentence because "the boy provoked him". Now you see why I want to move abroad..

Shot a little boy for his music being too loud??????? That is horrendous! - and for the courts to decide the boy had 'provoked' him??? If that happened here there would be a major inquiry, the policeman would lose his job and pension; probably go to jail and the child (or his family) would get a ton of compensation. Yes, I can see.

I'm glad your sister got her cards back. Luckily, my mum didnt have much money in her bag as the cards went missing BEFORE she went to the bank. The bus driver did not charge her the fare for the ride home.

Well that certainly sucks a little bit. That is such a pain having to report them all, waiting on hold all the time and then having to wait for new cards to be sent out. This fortunately has never happened to me, but it did happen to a friend of mine while I was with him. We were travelling through the USA and were in Las Vegas for a couple of nights. We were wandering through the crowded street on the last night that we were there and he felt someone bump into him. As it was crowded, he thought nothing of it, but when he went to buy a drink at the next hotel, he noticed that his whole wallet was gone! This is a common occurrence in Vegas with it being one of the most popular places in the world for pick-pocketers. He had to spend the whole night on the phone back to Australia cancelling his cards. Due to the time difference, he was able to achieve this as the banks were open. He got his parents to wire him over some money to keep travelling with, but he also had an American bank account. So the next day we had to stop off at a town for about an hour while he sorted that out and withdrew the remaining cash from that account. He was still sorting the mess out after he returned to Australia as he had to go and get another drivers licence and all of the other cards that he had lost had to be replaced and then activated, etc.

Yes, its a bit of a hassle. Sounds like a nightmare for your friend... and it obviously dragged on. Luckily, mum doesnt carry her driving licence - we dont have to. If we're stopped by the police we have a time limit in which to produce our documents at the closest police ststion.

I seem to recall some "Watchdog" type programme advising against carrying a driving licence some years ago. I think it was probably an identity theft issue??

I think that we have that law in our state too, but as I grew up and started driving in a different state where you have to carry your licence, it has become a habit of mine to carry it. Plus you don't have the hassle of having to go out of your way to produce it later.

Hiya Wizzy, Life is ironic sometimes but being able to go out together will be very good for your Mom and with you being with her she will feel much better about everything. In a few weeks she won´t have forgot about it altogether but she will be able to put it behind her in some way.

Just a good job they disappeared before she'd been to the bank as she'd intended to draw money to cover a bill.I've rung her this morning and she sounds ok.

Hiya Wizzy, No but we did come very close to having to cancel them more than once. Thankfully because I´m very careful I found him his Cards the lot and the panic was over. We did have to change the Door Keys to the House twice but that was it. Also we had someone who thought himself very funny try to take Money out of an account but the Bank Manager phoned me and asked if I knew him and I said absolutely not and the money stayed in the Bank. Really sorry for your Mom. My Mom got robbed once and she was in tears this was in France fortunately she did´nt take very much cash with her and then there were no Credit Cards like now. Hope she recovers something and she has taken it very well too. Someone once stole my Shopping well tried to and I was very upset as I had no more cash to buy anything else. So the clever clogs who took my Shopping left it back downstairs again when I went to ask about it.

That will be nice for you to go out with her, even if it is to take care of business. I know that you can make it fun.

I think she's more upset that she had a wasted journey. She'd travelled 10miles specifically to deal with some financial stuff but, not having the cards meant that she couldn't do that. I wont be at work next week so, I can probably drive her there. We haven't had a trip out together for a few weeks.

I've lost my wallet once, and had it stolen another time. Luckily there were no credit cards in there, but my citizenship and medical card was in one, while my passport and my social insurance card was in the other. I also had a total of three hundred dollars when my wallet was lost. I'm now id-less and it's horrible because I can't do anything about it. It costs money to get my citizenship back and it would take up to six months, also without my citizenship I cannot get my passport back. I'm just waiting for my tax return and see how much they will give back so I can use that to get it done. I have not reported them missing. I should have done that a while ago, but because things started to piling up on me and needed urgent attention, I let it slip out mind. Now, that I saw this post, it reminded me again. I shall do it tomorrow. I wanted to travel for the past few months but I couldn't because you can't travel without ids. Such a drag. I hope no one is using my identification for illegal purposes. It would really suck.

I imagine that its worse to have your documents stoled/lost because its caused you a lot more inconvenience than just putting a stop on credit cards & that was a lot of money to lose I hope your tax refund will be enough to cover the cost of replacements and that you'll be able to travel again soon.

Hey Duyen, wouldn't it make sense if the citizen records were tracked online, like if there were some type of website that you could log onto and re-print the information? There has to be a better way than expecting one to carrry around a piece of paper in their hand and when a sharp wind blows it away, or it gets stolen, then ur screwed. Do they offer temporary documents for travel purposes and also work? How are U working now?

I have not had that problem yet. But it could easily happen, I am sure. My wallet is usually way down in the bottom of my purse, though, so it would not be easy to take it out without me knowing about it.

I think she had popped them into a little pocket at the top of her bag as she was just about to go to the bank. I tend to 'bury' mine and then it takes me ages to find them!

I am glad that your mom wasn't physically hurt by these thieves who seem to prey on old women. Not that I am expecting a little compassion from these low-lifes. But I find it really disturbing that they really prey on old women who cannot defend themselves. I remember three years ago when my mom was mugged in broad daylight. She visited a friend in the neighborhood where we used to live. Now having lived there for more than fifteen years, she felt it was a safe neighborhood. When she was about to go home and was waiting for a cab, a couple approached her and asked for directions. The old lady of course wanted to help, so gave the directions. The couple turned out to be thieves and literally kidnapped my mother because they took her to a van and drove around the area, trying to wheedle information from her. My guess is that they are trying to gauge if she is from a rich Chinese family (we are Chinese by the way) and if they can get her and ask for ransom. In the end, they released her. But not after getting her diamond ring and all the money in her ATM card. She had a good amount of money in there because my brother had just sent her money for her monthly allowance. My mother had the wits about her to text me and go to the nearest police station, but the thieves were never caught. But as to your question, no. I have never had the hassle of cancelling all my cards because I don't bring all of my cards in one wallet and bring all of them when I go out.

What a horrendous experience for your mother!! Some people are just evil scum! I hope she has recovered from the ordeal & that nothing of this sort ever happens to her again.

hi wizzywig I am glad that your mother did not suffer neither physical nor financial harm. Can it be that she might have misplaced them somewhere else? My beloved better half has been blaming me for the past months when she misplaced her online internet banking key, She had to file for a replacement. She was convinced that I took her key and misplaced it somewhere. A few weeks ago we were cleaning my car when I found her misplaced internet online banking key. It might have fallen from her own handbag.

She had them when she boarded the bus and she popped her change from the greengrocers in there about 5minutes before she got to the bank and they were gone (along with the £10 note from her change). It is, of course, possible that they somehow fell from her bag but the bag is zipped across the top. She did retrace her steps after reporting them missing but they had not been handed in anywhere. (I have just rung her and she seems to be fine this morning.)

I certainly have. Once, my purse was stolen. Nowadays, a person can also have their identity stolen. The whole thing can get pretty scary. Glad your mother didn't get hurt.
@Wizzywig (7847)

Yes, that is a scary thing - the thought of someone using your identity. I had a friend whose son had that happen and he was arrested 2 or 3 times for things the other guy did! He wasnt charged once the police realised but, not good.

I got pickpocketed in Prague in 1995. Fortunately, all they got was a small amount of cash, a credit card and my driver's license. We had plenty more cash, a back up card, and R's German bank acct to tide us over. But it was a pain cancelling the card in the middle of sightseeing and having to replace the license when I got back. Sorry about your mom's stuff.

Glad you weren't left stranded and without cash/cards for your holiday. As you say, its a pain having to deal with cancelling and replacing. I checked with my mum that she wasnt carrying her drivers licence at the time.

Yes, but it's mainly because I lost them in the apt. Usually, just after making the call, I find them, but then have to wait for the new cards to arrive:)Glad ur mum is OK

I 'lose' mine regularly on the "put them in a safe place" trip - so, far, I've managed to find them within a few hours. Did lose my driving licence and have to replace that though.

It hasn't happened to me personally, but my mom has had a pretty bad hassle of this same sort of thing. She was mugged one day when she was walking to her car after a dentist appointment. This man grabbed her entire purse and ran and got into a getaway car. She never got her purse or any of the possessions in it back. She had to go through the entire process of freezing and canceling all the necessary accounts/cards.

My mom lost her cards once, she immediately called to cancel them, and she lost no cash and was able to get a replacement the following week.

I am fairly confident that the same will happen here. We know that no-one had used the 2 main cards before she cancelled them.

Yes, I'm proud of her that she took action so quickly. Unfortunately, she wont get the money back (luckily not a great deal) and will have to pay for a replacement bus pass.
