Well, Antivirus software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including computer viruses, worms, and trojan horses. I would recommend three. The best part of using Security Shield 2010 is the fact that is powered by BitDefender. This antivirus company protects tens of millions of home and corporate users across the globe. The Shield Deluxe 2010 will protect your PC and personal data from theft, making it worth considering. Trend Micro AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware 2010 provides comprehensive and easy to use protection from viruses, intruders, and other Internet-based threats. Inexpensive product received excellent scores in the performance tests. And then Norton AntiVirus 2010 provides fast, responsive defense against all types of malicious software. The new Norton Protection System employs a multilayered set of security technologies that work in concert to detect, identify, and block attacks. It is still the top of its class in terms of performance. Thanks.

I've had Norton 360 for the past 3 years. It simply works for me. It's going to take a lot to convince me otherwise. Looks like it's going to stay awhile, at least for me. Hope yours works well too! Have a nice day ahead! :)

Simple. Linux.
I have a multi-boot computer with Ubuntu and Kubuntu Linux and Windows XP. When I'm online, I only use Linux.
Incidentally, for those who are not familiar with Linux, we don't have any anti-virus software installed like AVG and Avira. And as far as I know, getting viruses is not a worrisome problem in Linux.
So, my answer to the question, Linux is a good anti-virus software.

Linux lacks mainly of games and CAD applications. But to someone who wants to browse the web, watch movies online or just listen to music or watch movies linux has everything you could need. I personally prefer linux over windows, although there are some things I only get on windows like the powerful electronics simulator Proteus or software to program PICs.
And bloggeroo is right, linux lacks of many of the threads that windows have.

I have used many antivirus in the past, the ones I can tell you to stay away from are Norton and Panda, they are just resources hungry and will make your PC slow. At work we use McAfee and it works fine, it's light and we haven't had any major virus problem. AVG is also a good choice as is Nod32, wich I consider one of the best antivirus. Avast is one that I have installed but it just gave me trouble so now I stay away from that too.
Lately I've been using the antivirus from microsoft, microsoft security essentials. It works pretty good, it's lightweight and I feel it gives a pretty fair protection. I've installed it on 42 PCs at work and I haven't notices anything weird on them. It's a good antivirus and it's free, all you need is to have a valid license of Windows.

Yes, you need a genuine windows. If that's not your case then I recommend you to use the Nod32 antivirus. It's also very lightweight and gives enough protection. In fact I think all the antivirus gives the same amount of protection and it's just a matter of preferences, but I do prefer a lightweight antivirus.

I used free anti-viruses earlier...but the engineer who attended my pc...told me once that these free ones just show that they are working but your pc gets affected by viruses...then i shifted to paid anti-viruses and now i have installed it manually from a cd...which i purchased for 1200/- INR, and its working perfectly well....i have doubt if the free ones work perfectly...

1200/-INR = Rs. 1200. Anf if you don't know both, it's Indian currency. Won't give value too much ups and downs in market these days!

Yes, it looks like it is... me too, i also trying free avast rite now. I guess this avast free version doesn't handle the job very well... it cannot handle some viruses too! the friend of mine has ever had an experience using free avast, "it's good and works well" he said, but unfortunately, someday he found that his laptop is infected by some viruses and need to be reprogramming/reinstalled. anyway GoodLuck!

The only free anti-virus software I have ever used was AVG. I didn't have any problems with it. But, my husband did download it and it caused his entire computer to crash. I decided to skip the free programs and I bought Norton's. I really like Norton's, but it is kind of expensive. I'm sorry I can't help answer this question any better. I really don't know a good, free program other than AVG.

I have used Avast, and AVG, but now I am using Microsoft Security Essentials. It is a good antivirus, and it is free, and that is teh best part of it. I like it much better than Avast or AVG. It does pick up anything that might cause problems and for a free one, it does really well. I wasn't sure about it at first, but I thought I would give it a try and see how it works, and I will contimue using it. Take care, and happy mylotting.

I use Avira Free, and quite satisfied with... Never had any problem...
If I got badly virus, I prefer to restore my backup windows....
I've my Antivirus detect some program as virus, but when I update virus definition to newest one... my program not detected as virus anymore, so I don't really bother with it as long as my computer works fine. I've experience this with Avira, PC-MAV (local antivirus), McAfee 7, McAfee Security 2010, and Norton. Sometimes... antivirus made mistake, so don't just depend on them... depend on your own skill...

Somehow i agree with your opinion about "don't just depend on them... depend on your own skill..." by the way, have you tried the avira premium with 30 days of trial?? if i am not mistake, it is free tho... we just have to renew the license every 30 day, to keep using it! and it has beter security feature anyway, what about mcAfee?? you said that you hv experience with... so hows the performance? i and was it free too?? thanks for sharing it!

You mean Avira 10 Premium? No, I don't try it, but I've try Avira 7 Premium several years ago, and it's rather heavy than free version.
Mcafee isn't free, McAfee just too heavy, I don't like antivirus that slow down my computer. And there is some virus that not detected by McAfee but Avira did, and otherwise...
I prefer use Deepfreeze or ShadowDeffender to freeze my drive...

If you really want to have the best security for your computer. You have to pay for it. I recommend McAffee Antivirus, it will surely kill all viruses and worms and no virus can pass the security it provides.
If you want a free anti virus, Try AVG antivirus Version 9. It is not a free software but you can get it free if you are little bit techie on the net. hehe. =)
Good luck.

McAfee is not free. You need to pay it monthly or yearly.
I want to tell you how to get AVG v.9 for free but I don't know if I am allowed to post it in here. I don't want to get banned. hehe. Visit my profile and my site then contact me via my contact page. then I will tell you how.

Hello mate. I've used much antivirus/Internet security programs. Right now I use Avira internet security Premium and license expires after 3 days. Until this moment, I'm very satisfied from Avira, it protects very well. If you want hopeful protection don't work with these free versions. If you can't afford to buy the product you know how you can find an alternative... And if you want better security while you're surfing the solution is "internet security", no "antivirus". The antivirus is the better solution if you operate more with files. The best Internet security I've used are:
Kapersky KIS
Norton Premium
Avira Premium
ESSET NOD32
From the free ones the best are:
Comodo -that's rally the best free antivirus
Avira free
AVG free
etc

I used AVG for a long time. Switched to Avira and then again to AVG. And both are my best antiviruses (Avira... long time no see though). Rest of them are not used by me but as I have so many friends I have seen the performance of almost all kind of anti-viruses.
It's quite hard to choose among free AVs. Licensed ones do greater jobs, though some of them were so bad! Mine is free and keeps my PC smiling. Only problem is it can't detect ALL the malwares and I've to help it many times. Besides, it doesn't remove some specific viruses. Can't say why
Still it's lot better than others, I never had to search frantically for alternatives getting my PC infected. Many of people here have to on, on regular basis.

Norton Antivirus, Mcafee are the leading antivirus softwares but are not free and expensive too. I have been using Kaspersky internet security for past one and half years (purchased yearly) and I find that it does great job in protection. Prior to that I was using Norton. Kaspersky lacks some facilities of Norton but still it is good enough, a lot cheaper. There are number of free antivirus softwares like AVG, Avira, Avast etc. but for a full protection against present day virus attacks you must go for the good ones as stated above. Trend micro antivirus, full version is another good one.

I've had AVAST, Norton, and now Macafee. So, far I like Macafee. It came on my new computer, and so far I haven't had a complaint about it. AVAST, I kinda had mixed feelings about that one. I put it on because a freind recommended it. And it worked fine, it hollered if there was a trojan on a website. The only I didn't like about it, was my computer didn't recognize that I had an antivirus software in it. The computer would have a little red arrow and then it would tell me that I need to check my computer security because I wasn't protected enough. And Norton, at first I had regular antivirus with them, and it was o.k. But, when I added the Norton 360 it just slowed down the computer to a snail pace. It's pretty bad when you can't surf because you antivirus is using too much space on your hard drive. My recommendation is try Avast is you want something free. But, also look at Macafee.
