Who was the champion when you first started watching WWE?

A very interesting question and quite the simple one. Who held the WWF/WWE(Or maybe WWWF Championship if there was a really long time fan lurking around) title when you first started watching wrestling. For me, I started watching during the Monday Night Wars era full time, like right at the beginning. So the first champion was Kevin Nash or as he was then known as Diesel. However, not for long, as Bret Hart won the belt a few weeks later. Still he was the first champion. How about you? Who as the champion when you first started watching wrestling or if you do not remember that, who is the earliest champion you do remember? Looking forward to reading your responses.

I honestly dont remember because I didnt pay attention to everything when I first started watching wrestling but give me a break I was only 6 or 7. However it was around 1997 and 1998 so it was probably either Shawn or Steve Austin all though I was a huge fan of Austin and I dont remeber him having the belt so must have been Shawn.

As I said in my response I first started watching with my dad, took a break, and then got back into it around the time Diesel was at the high of his career just before he left and then Stone Cold got HUGE! DX had also been formed with not just Shawn Michaels and Triple H ... their was also Chyna, The Road Dog Jessie James and Mr.Bad a$$ Billie Gunn! Good times! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Yeah that seems to be around right. If it was Shawn, it would not be too long after the Montreal match with Bret so quite an interesting time and if nothing else, when Austin was catching fire was interesting. Right at the beginning of the Attitude era. Thank you for your response, it is much appreciated. Have a nice day!

Yes, Andre was the champion, for about two minutes. He won in from Hogan, thanks to a crooked referee paid off by the Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase and then Andre sold his belt after having it for about two minutes, approximately. Which WWF President Jack Tunney voided and put up the belt in the tournament where Randy Savage won his first title. Hogan, yeah, I imagine he's when a lot of people picked up wrestling. Technically he was the champion in a way, over in WCW, but since this is WWE, my early days as a fan were running on Diesel Power. Thank you for your response, it is much appreciated. Have a nice day.

Bret Hart for me. I've always felt a lot of loyalty to him, because he was the first person who made me love wrestling.

Yeah, Bret Hart was great. As I said, when I Started, he was a few weeks away from winning his third title from Diesel. Had I started a bit later, I would have ran into his title run. Thank you for your response, it is much appreciated and contributed very much to the topic. Have a nice day.

I First started watching wrestling, when Bret and Owen Hart had their feud over the WWF championship also faintly remember the infamous steel cage match between the two. I also remember the kliq with X-pac,Diesel,Triple H and Shawn Michaels few years later. i also as a kid remember watching survivor series and the montreal screwjob wondering what the heck happened.

Bret 'the hitman' Hart was the first champion that i know of since i started watching wrestling back in 1994. But then Yokozuna was the classic heel champion and so was the undertaker.

I always thought that era from 1994-1997, post-Hogan, pre-Attitude was really underrated. Sure you had your share of Garbagemen, Plumbers, Hockey Players, and Jim Neidhart as Who(insert Abbott and Constello routine here). That does not mean that there were some good and entertaining personalities and some great wrestling around there. Still, thank you for your response it is much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks.

Ah yes, the Warrior, that was a good match. Too bad he really kind of faded out not too long after that title run was over, barring a couple of returns here and again. Thank you for your response, it was much appreciated and it contributed to the topic well. Have a nice day and thanks!

I also started watching WWF when Hogan was the champ, back in '85, when he recently got the title from Sheik.
Those good old days, I recall when it was a major event that the champ would appear on a televised interview. Not to say wrestle because that was alsmot like a WM moment right there.
Now, whomever the champion is, even appears in my toilet ... glorious WWF championship, so degraded.

When I first started watching wrestling it was around the Attitude era when Chris Jericho unified the Intercontinental and World Title. I got hooked to WWF because I was a little kid so all the girls, bad words, actions, and fighting really brought me into it. But now, I don't watch WWE because they changed into some new Teletubbies show. I changed and became an official TNA fan back around 2007. Atleast they have some what of an Attitude there.
