i am a teacher of a middle school. Recently, i feel very discouraged. i think i can't stay with my students any longer. they're so naughty, so lazy, so disappoining.
i am discouraged against teaching them. i believe they incorrigible. They never pay attention to they study. they only want to cheat in the examnination .
sometimes, i tried to guide them ,no matter how i tried, it make no sense to them.
Now i hate teaching very much. all my great efforts was in vain.
now i don't want to prepare my class, or even go into that classroom.
my colleague suggest that i should not care that too much.
Anyhow , it is my job. I am totally at a loss.

I've been a teacher for a short while. For college, in my country, college freshmen ages start at 15 or 16. I taught a few college freshmen and I must say that some are really apt to cheating and it really annoys me.
What you can do is to make your class exciting. make your class a fun class, where ideas are highly encouraged and fun filled activities are used to deliver the lecture. This way, your students will love you dearly, study for your subject just to please you.
This worked for me

college is different from middle school. students in my class have abandom themselves, as well as their parents. they want to admitted by college, if it can't be ,they will go home and learn to do business.college is not the only goal for them. in my opinion ,knowlege is not the goal for them too. in today's examnination, many students cheated. cheating has becoming the common phenomemon in our school because of the mobile phone. teachers can do nothing about it.

Have you tried doing something the kids might be interested in and teaching them through that?
I've taught kindergarten and except for a few hyperactive kids and special needs, I've had a good time. But even the others were not bad...just took a lot of energy out of me to keep up with them and I had to think hard to get through to them at their level.
I don't say you shouldn't care...but you need to think about how you can get through to them. They are probably that way due to circumstance or personal experiences.

Please don't be disappointed, teaching job is a good and challenged profession. Students of this middle school are usually naughty and lazy too. I remembered the college time, where we used make fun, we are so naughty, we used to make jokes on my lectures the age is like that. But my lecturers are never used to listen to us and very strict, some times they also mingle with us to make fun. Be professional, be strict and give some time to spend with them and try to understand them, they will certainly like you and co-operate with you.

Well I can understand your frustration, being a teacher can be really difficult at times, but you must not give up on the students because just think of when you were in school and how much the teacher made a difference in your life. It is important to set priorities and set boundaries when dealing with students. they need to understand what is expected of them. and like what has been mentioned already, try changing your teaching style, find out what is of interest to your class and introduce new and innovative teaching tools such as computers, games, video, art, music.
Todays youth need lots and lots of stimulation due to the many gadgets they use everyday, most school curriculum is outdated and will not reach the young minds of today. Hope this helps.

thank you for your understand. i'm a new teacher in our school, and i believe i have the different teaching style from those who have been stayed at this school for many years. at the beginning i liked using computer when having lession. anyhow, i found i as well as students benefits little from it. i thought computer can accelerate the efficiency and draw students's attention. i'm wrong. they only interested in the picture on the screen. i know s are eager for respect and they want to be thought high by their teacher. when i did these things, it brought opposite effect. they believe i am weak. they did't hand in homework ,refuse to finish my task ,even ignore my advice. it's terrible.

I'm sorry you should feel that way. When I was in highschool, one of teachers transferred to teach in an International school. She said most of the students there were just like the ones you mentioned: lazy, naughty, they have no regard for their studies, plus since she's a Filipino, she speaks with an accent and they make fun of her for that. She tells us how she would go home and cry almost every night after starting in that highschool for being a teacher, but not being able to actually impart her knowledge the way she should. It just so happens that you're teaching the class that doesn't care much for school at the moment, or might be dealing with some issues. By the way, I just thought of good movie for you. I'm not sure if you'll be able to relate much with the situation in the movie, but since you're a teacher I suggest you watch a movie that Hilary Swank starred in: Freedom Writers. Maybe you could get some ideas or inspiration on how to change the lives of your students.. Good luck!

you are right. students in my class care little for their study. they come to this school only to get the diploma ,what's the worse even worse, their parents seem very care nothing about their children' behaviour. all they need do is give the money when their children asked.that is maybe the source of all the question.
thank you for your recommendation.

Well you should get a little more stricter as you know in middle school the kids are going through puberty so times are changing you have to appear to be a mean teacher at the beginning as well otherwise the students will never take you seriously.

kids around that age are uncontrollable. it is useless for you to use brute force or even scold them. i often watch drama where the problematic student can be handled with unique way and different approach. rather then you make them follow your way, why dont you try to follow their way. this way you can interact with then better. this way u can advice them slowly.. its like its better to move in curve rather than straight forward. although the journey is longer, but the end game still the same. give it a try

I think they are too selfish. They are not a kid any more .they should try to understand others. i know it is useless persuading them to learn or even to behave like a student. anyhow, i change my attitude now. everybody has differnent view of life .they can be responsible for themselves. if its not correct, i can try to guide them .but if i failed, i should care it too much.

Middle school kids are some of the worst kids to teach they are more into suddenly being aware of the opposite gender, showing off and thinking they are hot. But more it has to do with indulgent parents too busy to take time or notice of their children. Those parents do not want to discipline their children in a proper manner where the children have set boundaries and rules and the parents enforce them EVERY TIME. Yet when anyone else wants to discipline those children the same parents come unglued and scream for teachers etc not to touch their kid who just cannot possibly have done ANYTHING wrong. Those parents have their head up their tookus.
If we brought good old fashioned and effective discipline to the schools and home we would have a lot better education system and more respectful students that actually learn and know learning is a valuable tool or their future lives. Instead we have an anal government that has no longer got any teeth when it comes to education and kids and we have kids with too much time on their hands, spoiled and disrespectful. What they need is a good old fashioned spanking on their behinds with a paddle. Suspension does not work that is what they want so they can go wander around the shopping malls and skate board or do some other stupid things. Suspension is not punishment for most kids that age.
But being humilated and embarrassed is very effective and that is what a swat or two on the behind does not to mention a momentary sting. I kids are suspended they should go with the truant officer to juvie for an over night stay effective immeadealty that would make parents and kids sober up more.
Teachers are supposed to care but most are in it for the money. As to cheating try some oral tests. You have the questions, you give the test orally and they cannot cheat that way they have to write their answer down. Spread them out around the room. Make the smart mouthed kids sit near those they think are geeks and nerds if they don't behave call the parents at work to come get their child or send to the principal and call the truant officer to take them to jail.
These kids have found you have no teeth and think they can do as they want with you. They have no respect for you. My husband is a substitute teacher and he often gets way more work out of students than the classroom teacher. He mostly teaches middle school students. He said they are perverse.
He says things to them like my 2 year old grandson acts just like you are isn't it time you grew out of your diapers and pacifier. They get the point quickly and the other kids laugh at them so they behave. Or things like if you want to act like a kindergartner I can send you to that class for the rest of the day. Or if they are making gross sounds, he says, "Johnny" you may be excused to use the bathroom apparently there is something the matter with your intestinal devices or I can send you to the school nurse for some pepto bismal.
Some times they ask him stupid questions like if he knows what 420 is and he smiles and tells them oh yes it is a special time, known as the anniversary I share with my wife. This just bugs them. Or if they want to not do their work he says first of all it is you not me who will be ignorant when it comes to a job and applying for one, if you don't want to learn that is no skin off my back. Most people who don't learn now end up digging ditches for latrines and cleaning bathroom stalls. Or they end up as beggers or criminals. They usually buckle down He has a sarcastic tongue that makes a point and turns their foolishness back on to themselves quickly.
At one school the principle took my husband aside and said " The students refer to you as the teacher from Hell" My husband asked if that was bad, the principal said no that is good, they respect you and we want you back as often as we can get you because you make them behave and they don't trash the room.
You need to get a thick skin and an acid tongue without getting into trouble yourself.

Every job has its hard time. I think being a teacher shall be very responsible. I know sometimes your students let you down, but I think some of us were the same when we were young. Try to be much more understanding to it. Sometimes people have to learn from the lessons. We can't expect that everybody study hard as well as not all of us work hard. All you have to is to try your best to teach the students. If they are not listening to you, it's not your fault. One day they may change as people will become mature and they will grow up.
I love China

hi Lucia..
Teaching is a big gift.. but, all of us don't deserve it... there is nothing in us in making a brilliant boy to get good marks/grade.. but it is the matter that the students of your kind to make them to get good marks...
So, don't hate your job... get yourself refreshing and go to the school...
Let your students see the new face of yours... be kind to them.. play with them... then you will feel how good this teaching job is....

Well first of all you cant be at loss : atleast you get your income
Secondly it comes at your feeling about your teaching to a student. So if a student is not interseted you have to be strict, TRY GIVING PUNISHMENT to one who is the head of the class, this will discourage the whole class in doing bad things..
There used to a teacher in our school , he used to make things interesting he taught with laughs and what i mean here is if they dont want to learn the normal way teach then the way they want.
THIS CAn be done like talk to them ... ask if you have any changes to make give a little less homework and
this all should help.
i m a student so i know it should

Just hang in there, I know how hard it is to be teachers at this time and age where students are just terrible. I have to agree with that. But these kids needs guidances, eventhough they think they know everything. Thats how we were when we grew up.
You could op being a lecturer in a university if you want a more mature audience. We are much more easier to handle and the lecturers don't have to do much other than teach and mark papers. Other than the research that they have to do though

Hi Lucia,
Very happy to meet you online. Please don't angry and lose hope. Children are always treasonous when they are in their teens. Do you remember ourseleves when we are at that ages? Don't force them to do something, otherwise they will do against you. You can make something to absorb their attention. Make them feeling you are their good friend, then they will trust you and do as what you tell to.
Wish this method can help you.
All the best.
Your friend,
jxndwl

I am a teacher too(College). Do not do this to yourself. You have to be professional about it lest you get ulcers. Just do your work, to the best of your ablities and leave the rest to fate. In my course of teaching, I have found that some people are destined to greatness while others will always be small timers. Am sure in your class there are some good students....look at the good in them and help them to become great people.
