Hi friends I have come across many words or names difficult to pronounce - the latest being the Volcano which erupted - though in the newspapers I learnt finally the actual pronunciation the spelling which is quite different from the pronunciation stumps me!! and I always seemed to be able to get along with words and names to spell and pronounce easily ( maybe being an Indian and that too a S.Indian by roots helps as there are really some difficult words!!) but this erupting Volcano Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland really took the cake!! And then when I searched Iceland IK found a lot of difficult names/words!!! and my daughter - when her daughters were born - wanted to give very simple and easy Indian names to them- as she lives in Europe where she did not want the children to have difficult pronunciation/spelling ( for the local Swiss) names which included "J" or "Y" which are normally mis-spelt or mispronounced!!! have you come across such names/words or have you come across such situations??!! how do you manage then??

In our own country we find names that are unpronounceable especially those who belong to Tamil and Malayalam communities. Sometimes these names are so long that they are more like tongue twisters and have certain alphabets which are silent though they figure in the name.Even Russian and Slovak names are quite unpronounceable and those of us who are not familiar with them can get quite rattled trying to pronounce them.

Hi Vijay I am a little surprised that you find Tamil/Malyalee names difficult to pronounce, knowing you!!! Or are you saying it in general and not pertaining to you?? AND FOR THE PROFESSOR TOO: And by the way though I agree that Slovak or Slav language based words, initially it was for me, but since I had learnt that language ( Russian, and all Slav languages are similar )and could understand or even converse a bit when visiting those countries I do not find them difficult - but yes the language in Iceland is something where all consonants seem to come together with pronunciation even more different as to what is spelt!!!

I think like in the German language the "J" is silent and maybe ( like in some European languages) the Y may be pronounced as "T". By the way any one from ICELAND ON MYLOT!!!??

well, there are really may names and words too in all the languages that are very hard to pronounce, especially if we hear it for the very first time, and in my language there are also some words, not names, that even I who am a mother language speaker can't pronounce it that good and fast!
