i would recommend Pinnacle Studio which i think by far is simple and user friendly.. the transitions, the effects either for sound or video, the chroma key, et cetera. i've been using for sometime now, doing some videoke [mtv like with music, pictures and videos combined] kind presentation for my family and friends..

there are actually a lot of video editing software out there. Windows Movie Maker is very basic. There is Adobe Premier w/c a lot of professionals are using. If you want a more windows movie maker approach, there is Ulead and And Cyberlink Director.
But personally, I think a merge of different video editing software is best, especially if you want different great effects

There are many options for video edition, you can try: Virtualdub that is a free video editor software:
http://www.virtualdub.org/
Or if you want more professional software then try: Sony vegas, is a powerful video editor but it's not free:

Adobe premiere is another good option as somebody mentioned before.
Good luck...

check out Sony Vegas. there are a few versions to it. it's a very simple yet powerful video editing tool. in fact, i've already earned quite a bit from creating & editing corporate videos on it...and you can practically learn it overnight..

No, I don't think that Windows Movie Maker is the best for editing. This is where the Macs come in. Macs have an app called iMovie which let's you make great videos, and it is at 100% free in the newest Macs. For the best experience, you should get an app called "Final Cut Studio/Pro"
Those are only for Macs because I don't use PCs, and so I don't know so much about their software
Final Cut Pro is da best

If you plan on making a big production, most movie makers who use a Mac uses Final Cut Pro. Otherwise, you could also use Adobe Premier. Both programs has almost the same features. It has great features and effects that you can place to your video. It gives you absolute freedom to edit your picture, from easily cutting video clips, to making those cool sci-fi scenes using green screen. It also supports a lot of video file types.
