Do you feed your dogs with chicken meat?

My dachshund sometimes does not want to eat his dog food. He'll just smell it and go away from it. The next day I can still see his dog food untouched. What I did is give him some chicken meat added to cooked rice and he eats them with gusto. The problem is, I noticed these past few days that his skin gets dry and flaky. Do you think it has something to do with the chicken meat? I was wondering what to put on his skin so it won't go dry. Need your advise on this.

my mother who's been the one feeding our dogs ever since has a number rule, never feed them chicken meat because they are allergic to it.. and we never did.. everytime, someone in my family volunteers to feed our dog, that's the only thing we have to remember.. I don't know, she doesn't studied about it, its just probably from experience.. a friend told me that they mix the food with vitamin E, they just opened one or two Vit. E gel capsules onto the dog food and mix it so the dog won't recognized it, she said it really worked..

I think not really allergic but the one feeding the dog might not noticed that there are chicken bones to it. Chicken bones are so sharp that it can easily harm the dog's intestines, that's why. Is the vitamin E you're talking about is the same vitamin E gel capsule that we take? Tahnks!

Your colleague was correct. Bones from any part of a chicken not just the thigh can kill your dog!

If any of my dogs go off their food on top of having a skin problem. I do not go on a general forum to ask for a diagnosis ...I at least go to Pet Problem website where you can ask a vet a question!:

However I prefer to TAKE THE DOG TO A VET!

i dont think it's the chicken, i feed my dogs chicken all the time but i boil it and that takes out all the additives in the chicken, and most of that greasy fat they inject in the food. could be the starch in the rice, you could try and ive done this before adding vitamin e to the food but in a small quantity at first until his body gets used to it so he doesnt have any mistakes in the home. over washing your dogs coat will cause dry skin as does excess heat and dry air in the home. some pet shores carry oatmeal baths for dogs who have skin allergies and that seems to work on some breeds.i know vet's are expensive but if it continues i'd ask a vet for advise it could be something else like a parasite in his blood which is easily taken care of with medication.

Ah...so it's just okay to feed them with chicken meat? Some says that chicken can cause allergies for the dogs. Anyway, thanks for responding!

yes, i feed my dogs raw food all the time.. beef, chicken leg quarter, as well as fish..if your dog is allergic to chicken meat, then you should better quit that habit..if the skin of your dog gets dry and flaky try adding some supplements to his diet.. supplements i used in order to have a healthy and shiny coat are fish oil, vitamin e, omega 3,6 and 9 as well as vitamin c and flax seed oil. try this and it will surely help.. :)

Hi junrapmian, just eating cooked rice with chicken meat added to it may be it is not enough mineral or vitamin for the dog. But since your dog is not taking the meat continuously for many days. I think the skin problem of your dog most probably is, it is allergic to the chicken meat or rice.
Anyway it is nice to bring your pet dog to visit a vet to have a diagnose. I believe the advice from the vet is the best way to help get rid of the skin problem
Happy posting

I feed my 2 Bouviers Chicken w/ Pro Plan. Their interest lately is not good. They usually is very good. Don't worry about the skin drying. Dogs will sometimes take their food and hide it for a few days . only to go back and devour it, Why, it's a dog thing. Just like eating grass..If you r really interested in moisture, try pork fat grease on it, ie bacon grease etc. it will stay moist for a long time.

Add oil to his chicken and rice, along with some vegetables like peas and corn. That should round out his diet so his skin condition will clear.
The problem is from inside not outside his little body. Dog foods, even the dry ones, are formulated to give him everything he needs for a shiny coat.
If you try the above, within a couple of weeks, you should see quite a difference - for the better.
Good luck.

I stopped feeding my dog chicken meat and fish because he sheds too much. A dog breeder in our place told me that. He does not also eat dog food so I cook his meals it's ground pork or beef with carrots, potatoes and cabbage and a little dash of pepper and salt no other seasoning because there are seasonings that dogs can't take. Also I noticed when I was feeding him chicken he smells but now he does not. I also use medicated herbal soap with madre de cacao and tea tree oil. Herbal dog shampoo and conditioner. I also got him a food supplement to help keep his coat shiny and healthy and it helps.

My dog not even wanna touch the dog food because since puppy we give him fresh food. I usually give my dog, cow, chicken and fish. Until this day he haven't face any problem especially in skin. I think you had to make sure don't give him to much salt in his food. I think if your dog skin dry and flaky maybe you use the wrong shampoo to bathe your dog or your dog had allergies to certain food.

Hi junrapmian, well maybe chicken meat is not good for your dog because he developed some rashes. Sometimes there are people who are also allergic to chicken meat. It causes skin excema. If your dog has penchant for cooked meat, then give him pork barbecue minus the fat. I wish you'll consult a vet first before giving your dog a topical treatment. But I give my cat or I spread some vaseline royal jelly if my skin gets chapped or flaked.

My little Gissi gets Ham mixed in his Dog food he will not eat it if there is no Ham in it
I have given him chicken to as he does like Chicken
I can not see it being the Chicken doing this to your Dog, I was told by my Vet when Gissi gets like that to bath him with Baby Shampoo which is gentle on his Skin
So try that

My miniature dachshund likes to eat ham. She also likes to eat her dog food. She will eat almost anything. She will eat all day if I let her. I suggest you stop giving him chicken and see what happens.

I own three pekingese dogs. At times I do give them chicken mixed with rice. The problem why your dog is not eating his dog food is because he's already used to table foods. I have had that problem also with my dogs. So a couple of months back I gave my dogs nothing but dog food. For a couple of days they were not touching the dog food. I was giving them various types such as IAM's and Pedigree. I didn't give in to feed them anymore chicken/rice or especially chopped hot dogs. Finally after those couple of days passed they finally gave in to eat their dog food.
You have to remember that when you do feed your dog it's proper food they will digest a lot better and it's good for their intake for minerals, vitamins and proteins.
So then, stop feeding your dog table food, set dog food in their bowl, wait a couple of days or so and it will eventually get in the habit to eat it. Don't worry, the dog won't starve, they can last weeks without food -- it will have no choice but to eat it.
I do recommend Pedigree brand or IAM's.

I never feed my dogs table food because I don't want them begging or staring me down while I'm eating. To me that's the most annoying thing. But in your matter maybe your dog was just not hungry? Has the weather changed lately? Perhaps this is why your dog's skin was getting dry and flakey? I would call the vet and ask them this question if you're concerned.
Good luck
Have a nice night

He's missing out on the vitamins and things that are in the dog food. Rice and chicken is an okay human food for dogs to eat but its not enough. If your dog refuses to eat its own kind of food try switching to a different brand and when you give him human food give supplements formulated for dogs with it.

I doubt your dogs skin problem has anything to do with it diet.(Unless your dog is allergic to the chicken)
My dog had the same problem and it turned out to be an allergy to pollen. I would recomnend that you take your dog to a animal dermatologist if the problem starts to get real bad.
