Scaly Skin (Ichthyosis Vulgaris) Remedy

I'd like to ask for some advice on scaly skin. Ichthyosis Vulgaris is a hereditary skin condition that makes the skin, usually on the legs and arms, get so dry that it looks like there are scales. Apparently not a lot of people get this because when I went to the dermatologist, she didn't know what it was. I just found out what my skin condition was through personal research.
What's the best remedy for scaly skin or extremely dry skin? I hope someone could help me out with this.

I dont have any quick cures
but I can offer some ideas to aleve the discomfort
my husband suffers from extremely dry, scaley, itchy skin
he uses Aveeno body lotion with oatmeal and shea butter
it really helps moisturize and repair the skin
he also uses cortizone cream on the really painful spots
it has a numbing agent in that relieves the pain
