The next generation of cell phone interfaces is currently under development at Ishikawa laboratory at the University of Tokyo but instead of using a touchscreen the new interface is touch less. This new technology will use a high speed camera on the cell phone to track user finger movements and gestures.

This is a wonderful concept and I think that it is something that has been in the works for quite some time. I hope that it is something that is very successful in it's first incarnation because I actually feel like the touch screen phones are definitely not the most effective form of navigating through the functions of a phone. I have the worst luck with anything that is associated with using a touch screen (this includes phones, checkouts at the supermarket and everything else).

Why am I not suprised? Personally I expected this a long time ago. But, that does sound like something that might be good.

My phone has that already, kinda. It's a real basic version of it & it only works with 2 functions of the phone. When the phone rings, I can wave my hand infront of it & it mutes the ringing. If I set an alarm for the phone & it goes off, I can wave my hand infront of it & it goes into snooze. The phone's model is Sony
Ericsson TM717.

I have seen many patents and concepts from different mobile phone manufacturers which would do similar touch less and mostly gestures interface or control. Maybe it is not yet the right time for it because the technology is not yet well suited for it. The performance is still not so good or better than the touch interface which is simply much more intuitive.
