G-d is a fully spiritual (not physical, can't be measured by science or perceived in any physical way). Is that entity that created everything there is, including space and time, so there is no question "what was before?", because G-d is outside time and therefore, since he created it, he's not affected by it. He's totally aware of everything that happens (so you could say that his everywhere). He has total power over everything he created (like nature). He created us to give us good. The best possible good which is to enjoy a connection with him for the rest of eternity. That's why we were put in this world first, so we use our freewill and decide to get close to him now when we can't see him so clearly. That way we earn out closeness to him.
That's pretty much all we know about G-d.

He can try. As long as you are trying to do good, then you are doing good. Its the effort that counts.

But why did you do Good? and to whom do you do Good to? If I only do good to those I choose I have not done good but have acted out of selfishness. To do Good I must first know what Good is and the do it because it is Good. So my next question to you is how can man who is evil do that which is good?
