Eating using your bare hands was known or is common to the Filipinos. In Ilokano term it is called "kinnamut". Recently, we had our lunch in Mang Inasal, A Filipino restaurant where most of the customers were doing it and eating using bare was really more convenient to me as long as my hands were clean and food seems to taste better and more enjoyable. How bout you, hve you tried eating using your hands? was it convenient and enjoyable to eat

I'm a Filipino, too. However, I don't have fondness in eating without using any cutleries. Simply because it's messy and smelly.
What's weird though, is that when I'm eating with friends, families and other close relations and especially when the food requires dexterity (seafoods like fish, crabs, shrimps, etc.) I prefer using my bare hands.
It's not the idea that it's easier to eat or you have authority over your food or it's more comfortable; it's the openness, the feeling of being at home and welcoming other people within your own circle of privacy. It's like sharing yourself to others by letting them know how carefree you are by using using your hands when eating.
It's a bit sentimental but this is my only reason I could eat without any aids.
Just my two cents.

I agree that using bare hands while eating depends on the occasion
and the food your eating. I guess the real reason for doing
such would really be because of openness, a person usually
enjoy his/her meal when he's with a person that he/she is
comfortable or close with and eating using bare hands is
a lot enjoyable with that. Thanks for the idea. Happy mylotting!

Your culture along with us really have a lot of similarities. and yes!
it's a must that our hands be clean before and after eating.
Unfortunately, eating dishes with soup can be really hard to eat using bare hands and if the food were eating is hot. :)

I like to eat with my hands but I it depends on the situation when I would eat with it. My husband can eat with his hands but he is not used to it. My father likes eating with his hands because he is an Ilokano. There are some culture who thinks eating with hands is not a part of having good manners but its okay, I really enjoy it.

Wow! your father is a fellow ilokano and being an ilokano or rather a Filipino eating with bare hands is like a trademark. I guess as long as eating with your hands being cleaned up then, there's nothing wrong to do it. It's just being comfortable and being true to one's self.

not messy at all, the choc doesnt go all the way to the top of the strawberry so you have room to hold it without getting messy

At first when we ate at Mang Inasal in Manila, I was very uncomfortable because the chicken was hard to eat using spoon and fork. Good thing I was able to try in Baguio and that's the best restaurant where I enjoyed my meal. Imagine, people eating with their plastic gloves and outsiders staring at you. haha...

Honestly, I cannot eat using my hands or without having to use utensils because I tend to be so messy. I envy my partner whenever we are eating seafood, he uses his hands and he looks like he's enjoying and looks very satisfied with what he is eating.

It's not that I am ashamed to eat using my bare hands. It's just that I tend to be so messy that it loses my appetite.

I do eat with my bare hands. I am Filipino too but not from any province. I'm what you'd call manileƱa (though i'm not from the manila proper but from anitpolo). I grew up enjoying eating with my bare hands. There were times when we couldn't eat out much anymore (because it's too expensive) that my mum would prepare dinner for us just outside the house, on the drive way. we'd barbecue chicken and lay out banana leaves on the table. prepare vinegar for dipping the chicken into and some extra barbecue sauce for topping the rice with. This is how we eat out! literally, outside the house.
Sometimes we have the ordinary barbecue (for Filipinos) which is cubed pieces of pork on sticks, then grilled, or grilled liempo/porkchop, grilled tuna or any other yummy fish. We also prepare eggplant salad with vinegar and bagoong (shrimp paste/fish sauce) or unripe mangoes, bagoong and onions.
Sometimes, when we just feel like it, we eat fried chicken at home with our bare hands, especially if it's wings or the neck.
To remove the smell from our hands, we squeeze kalamansi all over our hands we treat it as soap) and wash regularly with soap. soy sauce smells tend to linger on the hands longer so better be careful with those!
