New Puppies!

Am I crazy? We were driving down the road over the weekend and there was a man selling puppies. I have been thinking about going to the humane society to get a playmate for my boxer/lab mix that we brought home from there last fall, but when I saw these puppies I just fell in love (so did my kids). We ended up bringing two of them home. They are exactly six weeks old and are part dachschund (sp?). My boxer/lab is very skeptical of them and tries to play, but he is just too big so I have to tell him no. I have been giving him extra attention and giving him opportunities to be around the puppies while I am sitting down and holding them. I learned today that he is getting protective of them - he refused to let me leave them outside by themselves and all I wanted to do was run in and get a drink of water! What has your experience been with bringing home a new puppy/dog? How did your other pets react?

hi, wow that is so cute. did your pups get dewormed already or have you made a vet visit to check on them? If not please do so as you are not sure if they are healthy they might transmit a disease to your older dog I have experienced that. Anyway I'm happy that your older dog is protective of the pups not jealous. That's a good sign. My JRT is a little bit jealous and ahe gets threatened by other dogs. I try to socialize her but has yet to arrange playdates with other dog owners but in my area it's just a few. and I do not know them. Wish my JRT will behave like your boxer.

They have been dewormed but they still need their first set of shots. The vet assistant also tells me that about two weeks after their first set of shots (when I take them in for their second set), he will want to deworm them again. I am going to take them in next week for that first round of shots, and I have already gotten the tick and flea powder (natural of course) out and used it on them. They are so funny and we are not having too hard a time training them, I am so excited!
