Every nation has its own culture and may have different ideas towards cheating in the exam. If a student cheat during the exam, should he be punished or be 'well-known' to everyone? What do you think a teacher should do when facing the cheating?

If its a class exam the teacher should change the place of the student to a location where he can be under the teachers surveillance. If its a board exam then the invigilators should be strict as the marks are going to be obtained will have a bearing in future. If its a board exam there should be a surprise check by higher authorities and the paper of the student cheating should be confiscated. The first thing the teacher should do is warn the student and if the student still persists then severe action should be taken against him.

Cheating is a matter of principle,i agree. Its serious all the time,i agree.Does anyone who has principles ever cheat in an exam?If a child has turned to cheating for the first time are you going to give him heavy punishment. When you as a teacher you should first make him realise the error of his ways. Then show him that those with principles will go further in life.If you treat a person who has committed a minor theft and put him in the company of major offenders in what way have you shown him the path to correct his erroneous ways?

I am a teacher and I teach college students. I can seriously say that there are really a lot of students who would cheat or attempt to cheat. What I usually would do is to avoid the possibility of cheating by creating different sets of exams and arranging the students properly. Should that fail and there would be whispers, I let them know that I can see and hear them by giving fair warnings. Further, if the cheating still goes on, I call his/her attention - though I don't tell him/her to stop cheating, I'm just going to call his/her name. Usually, they will stop. Should it be really obvious, I would just get the paper and send him/her home. Though that hasn't happened yet and I hope I'll never have to do that. On the other hand, I experienced proctoring an exam as well. I cannot force the student out because he/she wasn't under my class (we usually swap classes during exams) so after several warnings, I write on his/her paper a note to the teacher stating that the student is cheating. It's the prerogative of the teacher to do whatever she/he deems right for the cheater.

when cheating does happen the teacher needs to cancel the paper of the student who was attempting to cheat.but the student may think that the teacher was being to harsh to him and it may have a negative impact on the student.the reason is such incidents may haunt the student for the entire life.

hell0 there! well, according to that what they have done when I was at high-school I guess that they should really react properly, because as I was a student some teachers even have punished some of the students who were busted with some hits or some otherinsulting words. And that's what they should really must do when they catch someone who is cheating is to take his/her work, put the red lines on it and give that student the lowest note which is 2 in my country. in some schools students get even punished on a special teacher's meeting, and after a voting, all the teachers give their vote (a negative one) for that student, and he gets a negative note in his student book!

first of all, make it hard for the students to cheat. for example: have them one or more seats apart if possible; have different sets of exams. if you suspect a student attempting to cheat, approach the student and watch closely; let him/her know you are watching. if you catch a student in the act then get the paper and inform the student that he/she gets a zero for that exam.

The honesty comes from the heart, we can not make someone honest by forcing him to do certain kinds of deeds. Teacher should not allow student to do cheat, I think teacher should tell him to stop doing cheating lovingly, if student understands and stops it, then there is nothing better than this one. Otherwise teacher must punish him, first teacher should give him advise if not then the punishment must be there to stop student doing this king of cheating in future.

I think that the student should be punished. I am not sure how though. I think around here that people don't seem to take cheating to seriously, or not as seriously as they should anyway.

Hi staroj! I'm taking a course right now on education and also been a student as well. I can say that lots of students are involved in cheating. I think a way to avoid students from cheating is through seating arrangements and also having their own folders to cover their exam papers. If the student is still obviously cheating, I think he/she should be sent to the principal's/dean's office or at the guidance so that they can be apprehended. Teachers should be careful on what moves they should do on this kind of situations to avoid any misunderstandings and complaints from some parents.

Hi Staroj, For kids, cheating may happen at school, at home, or while playing a sport. It is a normal act. Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. It's tempting to cheat because it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won't help on the next test - unless the person cheats again. Kids who cheat may feel worried about getting caught. Whether they are caught or not, these kids may feel guilty, or embarrassed, or ashamed - or all three. Even if the cheater feels fine or doesn't get caught, that doesn't mean it's OK. If a kid gets caught cheating, the teacher may give the kid a "zero" score on the test, send him or her to the principal's office, and contact his or her parents. Worse than the bad grade may be the feeling of having disappointed other people, like parents and teachers. A parent may worry that you are not an honest person and a teacher might watch you more closely the next time you're taking a test. Thanks.

We all know that cheating is a bad gesture so we try to ready ourself to receive what we have done. Teachers have a capacity to do so as they did not teach bad manners while the students fight and defend their so called rights. Take chances and charges fouls made wide and wild. So the best thing to do is to do all good things at a time.

I am a teacher and I am totally against cheating cause I never cheated when I was in college. When I taught in college last year, I always had my eyes on my students cause I know they will be cheating and yeah! I was right! When I caught them, they already know that they are not gonna pass cause I told them the consequences. The students also need to know their sanctions so that they will avoid and be aware.

I am not a teacher but while I was in service, I conducted many departmental examinations. I did not directly invigilate but I had several invigilators under me. I know that it is an intrinsic tendency in human to cheat. Whenever they find it is safe to cheat, they would. We must never assume that they would never cheat. Firstly always find ways and means not only to prevent cheating and secondly, what must you do if you find them cheating. Prevention is always better than cure. Have a seating arrangement that would preclude interaction between examinees. Warn them beforehand of the consequences. Tell them to get rid of the cheating material before they begin. Keep a sharp eye on potential cheaters. Look out for ones with shifty eyes, or those who are looking around instead of giving the examination. In the event of doubt you may ask them to empty out everything they have in their pockets and out of the probable place where they might conceal such matter. What must you do if you catch someone cheating? Do not make a noise, and try to put the cheater to shame. Give discreet warnings, reasonable number of times. Then put a remark to this effect that he or she had been found cheating. After examination is over take the person to the Principal or the in-charge. Take appropriate action because there are rules framed for every offense.
