Before i used to keep charging my laptop though its fully charged..i thought the battery should not be given load. But later some said that overcharge reduces the battery life!! so i immediately plug off the charge after its 100%..i am so confused!! do you guys have any idea about this topic.. what you do?? do you plug off you laptop immediately after full charge or do you use your laptop with power AC even its 100% full!!

Hi!!
Overcharging the laptop battery is dangerous,it damages the battery. It doesnt deccrease the lifespan of the laptop but it makes the battery explode. Overcharge is also called overheating the battery, which means the temperature which the battery can not handle which makes it explode.Usually all L-ion battery based laptops come with an inbuilt controller chip which prevents the battery from overcharging, but overcharging the battery above a certain limit makes it explode. So overcharging can only damage the battery. For more information see http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/usingyourlaptop/f/overchargelb.htm

new info for me, thank you. now i'll wait for the charger's light to be green then i will unplug it. but, is this applicable to unibody type of laptops?
i have a mac though and i read somewhere in mac forums that macbooks stop charging after the battery is charged. hmmm.
prateek149 - this was what i meant earlier: once the battery is fully charged it switches to run on the ac adapter.
oh well, sometimes i unplug it when the battery is fully charged, sometimes i dont. what i think is important though is that the battery is used at one (or more) point.

Actually, I never plug off my laptop, it stays weeks and moths without plugging off from the electricity... I'm not sure if this action reduces the battery life, but if it was right why it's not written on the laptop box or in the instructions? Maybe the companies don't want to say the truth with the purpose to make more money from batteries? Is that guy a specialist? I've never heard somebody say that the full charged battery reduces the life time. I'll continue to don't plug off my laptop, I think it's ok... Actually, my battery is always on 98% so it's not full charged :D. Regards

i don't think it will be harmful to a laptop to be plugged even when the battery is fully charged. from what i understand, using AC is the main power source of the laptop, and battery is only used if the laptop is unplugged. what i mean is, if the battery is fully charged, then it stops charging. i hope i make sense hahaha.
it's not like a cellphone where the battery is its main power source.

Charge u'r laptop only when battery comes to 0 n it shuts down
After that allow it to charge fully for about 8 hrs, then remove it
Overcharging does reduce battery life also charging bfore battery gets over fully

I always use my laptop on the power supply but haven't yet encountered any kind of problem. It causes a very little effect to your battery life.Trust me.I f you are still in confusion then you can use your laptop after removing the battery and plugging it to the power supply. It may help in increasing the battery life.

I always keep the battery in my laptop fully charged in case I need to leave the house anytime. I read about this in some computer magazine that overcharging reduces the battery life. So when I am not using the laptop, I pull the plug. But I use the AC adapter when I am in the house so as to conserve the power in my battery. Just don't let the battery be totally drained. That would spell the end of its life.

I have the charger on all the time. It is true that some types of rechargeable batteries last much longer if allowed to fully discharge sometimes, like Ni-Cads. Cycling batteries, i.e. charge / discharge, is good for phone batteries. Laptops are a different matter, they don't like being fully discharged - that is long after the laptop has switched itself off. If your laptop is still quite new, you shouldn't worry about the battery. It should be designed for continuous use.
