We all know that our country's image has greatly diminished these past years. Most corrupt.... Most dangerous place for journalists.... Our neighbors are way ahead of us economically, technologically, etc. This is really sad.
In your own way what can you do to help the Philippines rise again?
For me I'll pay my taxes on time... Follow all the rules and laws, even the most basic like traffic rules... And I will not work outside the country. Let's face it. The dollar remittances of our OFWs are really helping our country but this is just a temporary solution. The permanent solution is all of our workers, scientists, engineers, teachers, all professionals to work here in our country. But sadly the salary here is nothing compared to other countries...

I think what I can do to help my country is to vote for the right president. A person whom I know who really fears God, because I know if this person really fears God then he would be afraid to sin, and afraid to steal money. And if this person really loves God, he would love this country also.
I would pay all my taxes in all, but it won't totally help the country if the taxes we are paying are continuously stolen by the abusive government officials. tsk tsk.

We can changer our situation right now if we choose the right politicians which are honest, not corrupt and they going to improve our country. I agree that our neighboring countries are more successful compare to us. Let's vote wisely this coming Monday.

Yeah, we should vote wisely this Monday. Too bad I can't vote because I'll be leaving for Manila tomorrow, and I will come back home next Saturday. I hope that you can make the right decision though. I hope the right candidate would win and I hope that there will be clean election, no cheating.

You forgot to include choosing the right leaders to lead the country. Since elections are due in a few days, we have to work hard for a clean and honest elections. Let us do everything to let the real winners come out and to put and end to cheating.

Woops I forgot about that. Yes you are right. I really hope everyone will vote for the candidate based on who they think is the right one not because he/she is leading in a survey. Thanks for the comment :D

Well I agree with your ideas except of course with working outside the country. I guess with the current rate of unemployment there is really no choice but seek employment somewhere else outside the Philippines. I also work here in the Philippines and I can see a stark difference between families that has an OFW with them and those that work locally. So for as long as the current situation with employment here would never change many will go abroad. There is nothing wrong with working abroad for as long as you provide your family here in the Philippines. There are many qualified workers in here but unfortunately we lack the opportunities and working abroad is just the next best thing to have our talents utilized to the fullest. It is not about being nationalistic but is a matter of survival. I believe that OFW is really helping this country stay afloat and if we don't allow them then our country is a long time bankrupt country. If not for the Dollar remittances where would we get these money from.

Yeah, but let's face it this way -- there isn't enough job opportunities for every single filipino worker that we have out there. So for most of us, the only choice is to go abroad. I think in my own "special" way (hehehe, LoL, special huh) - I do help the country's economic condition by spending my money on Filipino brands instead. For example, I buy Happee (Gumtect Advanced) toothpaste, not Sensodyne. It works just as good anyway. I know it sounds funny.... but I don't splurge on the more expensive brands yet I do not compromise the quality of the product that I buy. The rest of my dough goes to partying, clothes, and makeup. LoL.

Same here. I always go for the cheaper but good quality brands. I think I'll also do what you suggested. I think I'll buy Filipino product more as much as possible. Thanks :D

The problem is within us. Most of the Filipino citizens do not follow rules and regulations. They will make their own way which isn't good. The face of the Philippines reflects the people itself. Look at the candidates now their making noise against each other, throwing messages which can affect one's dignity. This should be not be happen. They will be our leaders for the next generation. Renew ourselves so we could renew the face of the Philippines.

I guess we're on the same track except for not working outside the country. If our country starts to get back on its feet then I believe we won't need to work abroad anymore. If people in our country are God-fearing then we won't have so much lawlessness in our lands.

I certainly agree with you juggerogre that are neighboring countries are way, way ahead of us in terms of economy and all the other things. It is just so sad that in spite of our country being rich with natural resources, competitive people, we do have nice beaches, the nature, the weather, we are indeed a blessed country but you see we just can't make it. We just can't get out being classified as a 3rd world country.
I think this is because of our Leaders. Filipino people are now more self-centered than ever. They focus more on their own benefit rather than contributing, working, and encouraging everyone to unite towards one goal. Ugaling Alimango- if you know what I mean, if one is making its way on the top, some people who are so envious will make way to pull him down instead of supporting him on the way up.
That's the kind of leaders we have in the Government right now- all those traditional politicians- TRAPO in all its sense. All of them are tied with their ultimate personal motives, ill will, loved for money and power. Lack of moral values, as they don't have personal relationship with God. You see, this is not about religion, it is one's principles in life and Fear of God. It is written in the Bible, Proverbs 1:7- "THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM"- a Leader who fears God will be wise and firm enough to lead the country.
Lastly, in 2 Chronicles 7:14- If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. See, we must ask for God's guidance, we must humble ourselves. We can elect all the intelligent leaders on their respective positions, but without God's guidance, they are nothing. Philippines will be nothing.

hahhaha so funny do you know who ruins the image of the country?
the POLITICIANS who keep throwing muds against other politician accusing a corruption despite the fact that it is not true.. they do this because they want to make NAMES...
most of the opposition use this tactic as a key to win the election... hmmm and people still cant get it.. of course the president is only one... she could not listen to all the filipinos at a time...
the president has done a lot of things to the provinces..... building schools, infrastructure, providing scholarships, agricultural programs and a lot more...
but do the people realize that the president had done all these stuff? NO! because there eyes and ears were covered by these oppositions trying to use the current administration just to get NAMES....

"A great civilization is not conquered from without, until it has destroyed itself from within" a quote from Will Durant. Philippines is an abundant archipelago not only in terms of natural resources, but the people or the citizens possess the abundance of geniuses and great minds, but the problem is the content of its character, the lack of self discipline, self reliance and honesty, we cannot deny it, Filipinos are despised and discriminated in different countries not only in color but in reputation, crab mentality is one of the destructive factor, but HOPE is always in store for us, we can change, YES WE CAN for the better!, starts from within ourselves, if we change, people around you will change, your family will change, the whole community will change, the mindset of the people will change, and if change is undoubtedly surfacing all over the country, people will choose a good leader who posses the heart in leading the advancement and development of the country.
