It is absolutely shocking to hear of so many parents having problems with teenagers who spend too much time playing computers games. The games are so addictive that they refused to bath, study or do their school homework or even take their meals in time.
Some even threaten to kill themselves or harm others if they are restricted from playing those games. This became a very worrying issue amongst their parents when their academic performance are badly affected. Would you suggest to ban these games until age 20 and above? What are your views and suggestions?

No!!
I have a 14 year old son who is addicted to his X Bos,DS , Wii etc
But he is a healthy happy lad - at the moment he's out playing cricket, yesterdau it was soccer.
It is up to parents to make sure that they geta good mixture of all that modern life offers them
If a game is coming to be too addictive, certainly take it a way for a while.
But everything should be in moderation!!

Thanks for your response, oldchem1(94).I'm pleased to hear that you have such an obedient, healthy and happy son. It's the wish of every parents. However, there are many parents who are finding it extremely difficult to wean these teenagers from their computer games no matter how hard they tried. Although moderation of everything is recommendable but teenagers these days are finding it difficult to abide.
It is especially hard for working parents who have limited time to monitor these teenagers of their activites constantly even before they becomes so addictive and glued to these powerful, manupulative, time consuming and influential computer games.
Admittingly,it would be really wonderful and if teenagers are able to manage their time and have a good mixture of all that the modern life is offering with the rapid speed of advanced technology. Congrats to you, oldchem 1.

Base on my own experience, I would yes, the computer games is so powerful. I was so attracted to the computer games and I had a record of playing a game 24hr straight without sleep during campus time. But after working, I am more behaved and able to control my passion towards it.
I am thankful that the computer is not common until I am at the edge of 18 and above. Therefore, I was not obsessed and got addicted with computer games during most of my teenage times. Or else, I might not be able to achieve satisfying academic result by spending too much time on computer games. Besides, I am grateful to my parents who are guiding me to plan my time for study and games with reasonable balance.
I think close monitoring and proper guidance for the teenagers are important to prevent them from addicted to the computer games. They deserve more time and exposure to the other aspects of life.

Wow! cheongyc(2156) thanks so much for your reply. How I wish my children can be like you. So compliant to your parents guidance and maintaining good balance between studies and games and are so successful in your academic achievements.
However, with the introduction of the internet in the past 15 years, gaming options are endless both in software and online versions.Adding to that, with more schools moving towards computer based teaching, parents place added importance by making sure their children are able not only to keep up but excell in navigating the computer.
Admittingly, close monitoring and proper guidance may undoubtedly prevent teenagers from being addicted to computer gaming.A fresh approach which I happened to read, was about a product called GamesNoMore. It is a software which does not need a database to prevent games from running on our computer. It allows us to enable or disable programming libraries for graphical and audio output used by all modern computer games. Hence, computer games simply won't run without these libraries.Would you think this would be another solution to alleviate computer gaming addiction?

Kids are prone to computer games addiction and it's a very normal phenomena. In process of growing up, they will be soon realize that there are a lot of other priorities in life which require much more attention from them.
I am amazed by how advanced the game industry is now. The varieties of online game available in Facebook alone is astonishing. I have tried playing some of them, in order to understand how the youngsters got attracted to it. Humorously, I am addicted to these mini games. Fortunately, it's not long before I realize I spent too much time on them .
I have heard of similar software. But I haven't tried any of these, because I didn't really have a need for it. I think you can go ahead to try it out. It should be working fine for the parental control purpose.

i have been playing computer games since long time ago. Actually it depends how you manage your time. When you are free, yes definately you can play computer games for fun but need to make sure that your didnt neglected your study. Not all the computer games are bad, some times they can train your brain how to think such as startegy game.
For those parents who afraid their children having bad performance in academic, why not buying a older model PC with no graphic cards so that their childern can only use the PC to surf net and cannot play games? this is just my suggestion

Thanks.Jin_Kamada(27)for your helpful suggestion and you are right. Frankly, computer gaming does improve hand-eye coordination, boost self-confidence by improving mental and physical interaction. As such, problem solving and logic thinking skills can be acquired. Hence, I do not intend to totally deprived my children of such advantages. However, I hope to gain a certain degree of control over their time spent in front of the computer and the type of program they surf.
It would be helpful to receive more suggestions of how to get teenagers these days to play computer gaming only during their leisure time, compliant to their parents advice and are managing their time effectively without having their parents nagging at them. It appears to be quite a challenge for single parents like and having to work abroad.
