Have you ever stayed up late to finish a book?

Hey all avid readers out there! Have you ever come across a book you just couldn't put down? Even when it started getting really late and you knew you really needed your sleep? I know it happens to me all the time. I come across a really great book and I can't for the life of me put it down to catch some shut eye. I've stayed up as late as 3 AM to finish a book. How about you?

Yep, I do it all the time. I'll be ready for bed and I'll tell myself "ok you're just going to read a chapter or two and then go to sleep." Next thing I know I'm done with the book and it's almost morning! But I love reading and I love being able to read in the middle of the night when no one is around to bother me. The time just flies by. Sure it makes it hard to get for work in the morning tho... but if it's a really good book, I think it's worth it.

Me too! And ditto with the "ok you're just going to read a chapter or two" thing. I keep telling myself... one more chapter! Just one more chapter! Then when there's only 50 pages left to go I decide... "Well why not just go all the way to the end?" But if it's a good book, it's worth it!

Exactly. When you're near the end anyway you just think "alright I'll just finish the book and then go to bed. No point in stopping now!"

Always, and I end up sleeping the next day. For me reading books is better than watching a movie..

In the time of exams i have stayed up late i.e., up to late night to finish the syllabus. And the books are also very tough, because it is technical know. As a engineering student i have to study minimum ten hours a day.

I've never stayed up late to study. Usually I do my studying in bits and pieces, and I'll never cram before a test. I hate study reading anyway, and much prefer my fantasy novels.

Wow... lol I've always heard that it's much better to get your sleep than to cram all night. I've felt better taking tests when I've been fully rested instead of blurry eyed. That's why I try not to stay up very late on school nights.

I'm glad I am not the only one. My fiance things that I am using the book as an excuse to stay up late till he falls asleep but now books can hook people into lack of sleep ahaha. I have stayed up one night reading The chinese Cinderella and Hawaii's local book called "Tattoo" very empowering books. I love them! Isn't it amazing when books can inspire you sometimes and make you stay up and lose track of the time?

Well i don't usually read books but I love comic books. Whenever I buy a comic book, I don't go to sleep unless i've read whole of the book regardless of the time.

I can get into some longer book series but when it gets to the point where it seems like it's just never going to end (around the dozenth book for adult series and the thirtieth for children's series)... I'm usually fed up. It's not that I don't love the story or the characters, but at some point I'd like all to be right in the world, for everyone to settle down, and for the final happy ending to come. Then the characters grow and change and move on with their lives. When it seems like it's never going to end, it's also almost like they're frozen in time. I don't like it much. lol But that's what's great about the number of books in bookstores.... you can read something super long and I can read the stuff that actually has an ending. lol

I'm not much of a fan of comics myself... those serials seem like they go on forever and I actually kind of prefer stories that end. lol

I'm actually the opposite of you it seems . I prefer stories that go on for some time, books end so quickly which makes me kinda sad and wish it was a bit longer.

I will usually only stay up late, either to finish a book, or a movie, when I know I don't have to get up the next morning. Although having said that, if it's already late and I know I'm only getting a few hours sleep before having to get up next day, I might resign myself to being tired; and stay up even longer on a movie or book.

I only spend a very small portion of the day reading a book, maybe 15 minutes tops; but don't spend much time watching movies either: rare is the movie that I'll watch all the way through in one sitting; I'm more of a compulsive creator and always have been; that said, I read a colossal amount online, when I'm relaxing, and not working. I think you're lucky if you think that...because I believe the creative intellect is more easily stimulated by books than movies.

I've never stayed up late to finish a movie, but then again I usually don't start movies when it starts getting late. I actually think books are better than movies. I'm totally a weird kid in my generation like that.

Hi allyoftherain! There have been several times in the past that I stayed up late just to finish a book. I couldn't recall all books I have read until the wee hours. But I am sure that one of those books I could not put down is The Da Vinci Code. Also the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

I'm also a really big fan of the Lord of the Rings, though I don't think I ever stayed up late to finish any of them. I'm pretty sure I did spend a large portion of the morning and into the evening to finish Return of the King though.

hi ally, The same case here ! It happens with me many a times. I have to force myself to put a really exciting book down .However, once I stayed up all night to finish an interesting book.Reading until 1 or 2 am is a very common feature with me. The next day I am moving around like a zombie though lol...Wish you a great year ahead

Wow. Can't say I've ever stayed up all night! I usually finish the book or give up before that happens! I've stayed up until 1 or 2 am easy though. I can argue with myself and say that it's fairly early and I'll still get four hours of sleep. lol Happy reading in 2011!

Yes. Especially if the author is John Saul. Have you read any of his work? His books are difficult to put down because they are the type which keeps your mind churning, wondering what's going to happen next. But in general I always stay late to finish mystery-thriller books. I get restless not knowing how the book ends.

No, haven't read any by him. I'm really more into High Fantasy books, but there are a few mysteries that get me.

Yeah, Lord of the Rings would probably be the most famous one. My favorite is "The Last Unicorn" cause I have a bit of a thing for unicorns. I admire those types of writers too. It takes real creativity to develop a whole new world.

High fantasy huh? Like Lord of the Rings? Or that sort? I used to read that and thought Tolkien probably lives in his own world. Imagine developing a new set of creatures with their own culture and their distinct language. I just admire those type of writers.

There were some instances which made me to feel sleepless to read the book completely. It was a very long novel and I though to read them when I have some free hours on each day but when I started reading them I was quite excited to know the ending of the story. This excitement mad me to read the whole long novel in the late night.

I think that's the why it happens for most people. We've just got to get to the end.

I seldom have time to read a book, but when I start one I read until the last page. I would possibly take a day to catch up on all my newspaper reading and then write. Writing takes priority and I will write and read until the wee hours of the morning. I guess when you get older you want to squeeze out as much time as you can to be conscious and enjoy life.

I guess I could agree with that somewhat, but I do think that I spent more nights when I was younger staying up to read. These days I'm more concerned about getting my eight hours of sleep.

I've never stayed up an entire night for it before. Usually by 4:00AM I either finish the book or painfully put it aside to sleep.

Being a self-confessed, self-proclaimed bibliophile, staying up until the wee hours of the morning because of reading isn't new to me at all. I think it's just natural, especially when the book you are reading is really a great work and there's nothing that could stop you from going on and consuming it, not even your willingness to hit the sack. I might as well be sleep-deprived than to spend the rest of the day with nothing to do but to sleep. :)

It does come naturally, doesn't it? When you've got a good book, sleep just doesn't seem that important.

I used to do this when I was much younger, now though, I need my rest if I'm to be good for anything the next day.

I have never been so into the book as to prefer reading than sleeping but a friend of mine told she has been reading a book for 3 days almost without stopping. She wanted to find out what will happen as soon as possible so she just stopped in order to take sth for eating and went on till the end.

I almost always do that.^_^ I guess it would depend on the book. If it was engaging enough then I wouldnt sleep at all. Though, the latest hour I slept from reading was actually 6.30AM, the next day from when I started to read the book. That's how much of a book lover and reader I am.

Hi, this remind me a lot of me way back in highschool and college. I used to read novels way back and I usually finish a book a day. If the story is really good I would finish it until the wee hours of the morning even if I got an early class the following day. I just don't have the heart to put down the book. Every time I tell myself that I will only finish several pages I find myself moving on and moving on until I would finish the entire book. I would even remember that way back there was a power outage that lasted for like a month and i remember I used to use a flash light just to keep on reading during the night. LOL. I was really addicted to reading way back but not a lot of priorities has change.

I've read with a flashlight when the power was out too. I also remember my flashlight going out and going into the closet and turning on the light there to finish a book. I'd finish a book a day like this. It was fantastic.

I was reminded of my younger days. When I was in college I used to sleep at 2 0r 3 a.m. because of a nice book that I cannot put down. Even when I had my child, I loved reading books that made me forget sometimes about my other work that I needed to accomplish. I love reading fiction thriller by Grisham, Sheldon, Brown, Ludlum and many others. In fact a got a collection of their books.

I am in college, so I'm going through that right now. Everyone else is out partying. I'm reading a really good book! lol I think it's better for my brain than partying is.

Does reading until you don't even realize it is past dawn, and you are almost late for your 10 am shift at work count? That has happened to me more then once, I have this one more chapter syndrome, and it pops back up at the end of every chapter... With Appreciation.

I don't think that it would have been possible to describe me any better if you had been talking to me about the way that I am with reading. I've been an avid reader since I was a child and because of that there have been many nights from the time that I was a child until now that I have stayed up well into the early hours of the morning to finish reading a book that I'd been spending time reading. I will probably continue to do that for the rest of my life.
