With the general election rapidly approaching, Philippine presidential candidates are ramping up last-minute campaign efforts, amidst controversy, violence and a soaring budget deficit, to win crucial votes. What do you think are the most important issues in the 2010 elections? Should the candidates address corruption and accountability in the Philippine government, crime, violence, the economy? Please join the discussion here.

I think it's corruption first. If the government fails to address corruption all efforts to move the country forward is futile. The Philippines functions like dilapidated jeepney with too much work load wirh a rusty engine. Corruption keeps the country in reaching its goals. Doing a nice paint job without overhauling the engine won't get us anywhere.

Every candidate seem to have platforms to meet some or all of those, but we need the one who can meet them best. Poverty is one main issue and it seems to be connected to all of those issues you mentioned. It's true it's hard to look at each and think what a president should do first. But I am reading a brief outline of an short term/long term action plan which is definite. This includes giving attention to national debt and ways to augment national fund TAX system review, and prevention of graft in agencies related to tax collection unity of all govt sectors towards one common goal which is to end poverty transparency thru public bidding that can help people trust in their gov't programs and security/support for OFWs Housing support for squatters Funding of road infrastructure in less developed areas to help them improve. job creation Salary augmentation for medical workers, police and soldiers. Agricultural revolution quality education, feeding programs for poor students government hospitals and quality of medical service lasting peace in Mindanao at other areas affected by insurgency modern and professional AFP and PNP. These look like genuine plans, not dreamy and doable both in the short and long term. People look past this candidate and look at others despite his achievements, probably because of fear that he is another corrupt.

i agree with ybong007. corruption can be compared to a rotten fruit in a basket. it is needed to be removed because it will spread to other fruit and will also cause the rest to be rotten. that is how corruption works in a country. it makes the whole thing crooked. everything follows after corruption has been removed. leading the country to growth and development is easy without corruption in the government.
