I'm taking care of a kitten right now...they were abandoned by their mother. Well, actually the mother is still around, but she just seems to ignore her kittens. The worst part is, the other kittens are nowhere to be found. Its like she just got rid of them.
So do you guys have any idea why some mother cats do this?

hi donsky14.. I too had a cat and it also done same thing when it given birth to 4 kittens after 1.5 months.. then later I came to know that the cat was carrying again so it dint let the kittens near by it and just neglected them.. I think its the same case with your cat too..

There are even instances that mother cats kill their kittens, maybe due to hormonal imbalance during pregnancy and birthing. Especially if a human touched her kittens, she will not come back for them anymore. This can happen to humans too. But mostly, cats have this territorial thing and they see kittens as a problem for hunting.

Usually if the cat is young say under 2, she will abandon her kittens. I have seen this in very young cats many times due to it being her first litter, and being too young in the first place. It could also be hormonal, it could also be stress. There are many factors on why cats choose to leave her kittens.
