in my orientation earlier.. a speaker said that we aren't referred to as freshmen but rather 1st year students of the university because they were promoting gender sensitivity.. freshmen.. men.. what about girls.. that's a bit unfair they said.. then, there was this Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Graham (for example).. they said you shouldn't use that as well but rather Mr. Bernard Graham and Ms. Jewel Smith-Graham.. because mr. is used both for married and single men.. it's unfair that women had to be mrs. or something like that.. they should also be just ms. ..
do you agree?..

When I was in college, one of our professors was a Gender and Development advocate. He would always emphasize and remind us that when we write news, we should be gender-sensitive in every word we use. An example is instead of 'chairman' or 'chairwoman', it's appropriate to use 'chairperson'. We even photocopied a manual about gender-sensitivity. I think there's nothing to do with it. I like the idea actually.
