when i came home today, my cat was lazing on the dining table as usual. so i went through the routine of telling him to get off..no reaction. i asked him again politely...no reaction. i enticed him with his food bowl...still no reaction. as i was standing there scratching my head and wondering how to get him off the table without picking him up (he sheds alot, so i tend not to pick him up when i'm wearing dark clothes..), i glanced at him and i could have sworn that the little fella actually smiled at me.
can cats really do that? do they smile?

like the Cheshire cat in 'Alice in Wonderland' ?
i think it's a universal grin that they have for different situations...meanings may also include:
"...i'm smiling now, but if you don't feed me soon i'll just eat your dinner instead",
or
"..open the door you fool, i can't hold it in any longer.."
or
"...master, you stepped on some dog poo and didn't realize you're walking into the house with it..."
hahaha... :)

maybe it's your psychological reaction makes you feel that , if it is a dog , i will believe it , i always think dogs are a kind of intelligential animal, there are many moving stories about dogs and human beings, such as , the dog save the householder's life in the fire accident ,i often hear of dogs and hunman becoming friends , but i seldom hear of cats and human

well, there are quite a number of people who have experienced wonderful friendships & partnerships with their pet cats, just like dog owners..

Maybe they have their own way of expressing their happiness specially if we treat them well. I also do know that cats do dream just like the dogs. We do have cats at home, and it has been for so many times our cat gave birth and this is her 4th time.
We have studied their behavior well just like when they are frustrated to get a mice or catch some roaches. Our cat makes a very silly and frustrating sound once he does not get what he hunts. They are also our alarmer in the morning. They are really waiting outside our room and then asks for food. After you give them some food, they will take a nap and do some stretches and then go play around.
Although our male cat has been busy nowadays fighting other neighbors cat at night. He gets scratches and bruises all over his face and tummy and we talked to him how he look so ugly because of the lost fur patches and scratched marks on the face and at the back. He seems to listen and feels so ashamed he lost the fight that he does not reply back when we talk to him, unlike when he does the right thing, when we talk to him, he responds back. Not only can I say that cats can express happiness, they can also express disappointments and frustrations and sadness.

my cat reacts when i'm angry at it for doing something bad, like fighting or stealing food from the table. i've never hit my cat, but i think that the angry vibes make it shy away. and when everything is cool and calm, it sidles up to me as if saying that he's sorry or something. it's cool to know that cat's do react to our emotions..

The moment I read the title of your discussion, I thought that the content was about the cat in Alice in Wonderland but as I read the content of it... it seems that I was wrong.
I don't really think that cats can smile, I've never seen one so I can't say that they do smile.

haha..you're not the only one who had the wrong assumption
well, just because we never seen it doesn't necessarily mean that it can't happen, right? i'm just wondering out loud myself if they can realy smile or not..

Hi mario... Is cat can smile? I don't know... I've never been a cat....
You should post your discussion to your cats
But cat can angry, why cat can't smile... I believe they can, we just don't know how a cat smile... I have a cat that like to sleep in my lap, but someday she steal my food. I was very angry with her, and snap at her... After this incident, my cat always stare at me when we meet each other, and sometimes she bow. I can see that she is afraid with me.
If a cat can afraid, then a cat can happy too....

haha..i'll look for some cats that i can ask this to..
but you may have a point there, if the cat can be afraid, then the cat can be happy too!

haha...that is an animated cat, if i'm not mistaken but i did read somewhere that some cat's do move their tails a bit when they're happy. it's just the manner in which they move it denotes if they are happy or being alert to something..
thanks & happy myLotting!

I don't know about smile but I have just experienced two cats looking VERY happy.
My next door neighbour is a nurse at our local hospital and works long hours.
Her two cats having been waiting patiently all day for her to come home, pacing around the garden as only cats can.
When her car drove into the drive those cats certainly looked very happy to me!!
I had in fact just commented on this to my husband as I read your discussion - strange eh!!

No cats don't smile,it is fact that of all the animals in world only two animals smile one is Hyena and the other human beings( monkeys also smile but not all of the monkeys smile), rest all the other animals don't smile but they actually have different ways to express their happiness like the dogs weeps its tail, so I guess your cannot smile, but I guess maybe your cat has a smiling face like dolphins.
