When you're having a "de-clutter" are you a ruthless hard man...

... or a great big sentimental softie? Can you throw away that special (used)concert ticket; the shells from 'that day' at the beach; the photos; that (totally useless) gift that someone special gave you; your childhood toys; old school exercise books. How do you decide what goes and what stays? Is it a self-disciplined "haven't used it in a year...its out" or is it "I might need this..." I confess, I am a bit of a hoarder but I am going to have to get tough - My Mr Men toys are set to be the first casualty followed by those Star Wars bits and bobs that are going to be worth a fortune one day and those clothes that I am never realistically going to have the opportunity (nor the shape) to wear again.

In the past I have been a hoarder and kept all of these things that had sentimental value. In the last year or so as I have attempted to de-clutter the house, I have thrown away a lot of these things that were dust collectors or that had not come out of the cupboard for many years. It is not only sentimental things that I have kept either. I have kept leftovers from building projects around the home over the years and I recently filled my car and a trailer with these and took them to the dump. We are selling the house and I figured that if they have not come in handy by now, then they probably will not ever, so out they went! I would like to be more disciplined in this area in future as it was ridiculous how much stuff we had that we did not use. We Freecycled a lot of things too which is good as it saves them from filling up the landfill area.

I have a box of videos ready to take down to the charity shop, just sold 2 pair of shoes I bought in 1978 and have shredded a load of old bank statements so its a start. I've been through all the kitchen cupboards & dumped the odd saucers and chipped bowls & all those plastic scoops that came in some powdered drink stuff. Tomorrow I shall list more stuff on ebay.... - once I can get the old freezer out of the garage, I'm taking the dishwasher out there to clean it up a bit for Freecycle... but, I cant get the freezer out until we take all the garden rubbish to the tip. PS its been really sunny here today - went for a walk, did the garden, painted the number on my gate again....

It does feel good to have a clean out doesn't it! Freecycle is awesome for that. Although I am sure that there are certain people who are taking advantage of the system and selling some of the things that they get for free. Sunny here too. Not much rain around at this time of year.

Oh I am as ruthless as you can be when it comes to de-cluttering. I adore living in an organised minimal space and can't cope with having lots of unused items. I had a Grade A declutter in March when spring came and yet I feel like I'm ready to have another less serious one. I got rid of a lot of stuff on Freegle and others were happy to have my things and the charity shop got plenty of clothes (anything for a good cause). It makes more space for things I love so I am a big fan of de-cluttering on a regular basis.

Ah if you were local I would come and help you. I find it very therapeutic!

I have been a "declutter procrastinator" for far too long so now it is a mammoth task.

Thanks but there is no way I would let anyone in here at the moment. It is therapeutic, I agree - but I am easily distracted and not methodical. I am making headway though.

How ruthless I am depends on the day. The ticket stubs would go. The shells go into a glass dish with some pretty rocks and flattened glass pebbles. I have stuffed toys that someone gave my mom. I hoard tons of pretty pieces of things that I may do something with, though.

Then, set to and make your masterpiece Gerty

i'm a bit of a sentimental person. i keep stuff that i think has a values for me like my very first rubber shoes. i held on to it for a while 'til my mom got a hold of it and threw it away cuz it really smelled awful. lol. i also keep my cassette. i have those rage against the machine albums during the peak of their career. their music was leaning more on activism then and i loved it so much. i still have them now from they're debut album to 'the battle of los angeles'. i still have my notebooks when i was in highschool cuz at the back of those notebooks, i usually draw stuff that i think i may have use for in the future cuz i'm planning on being a tattoo artist one day. lol. it's a little off but i think tattoo artists are cool.

There are some things that you just have to keep aren't there? I think its great that you've held onto your drawings and I wish you well with your plans

i used to keep stuff because of sentimental value but as i grew older it became easier to throw the 'useless' things away. of course there are still some items that i hold on to, things that i may never really get to use someday. it used to be that when i decide to de-clutter i would spend most of the time looking through the stored stuff and recalling the old days. that's why it would take me days and days to finish and i would just end up keeping the stuff. nowadays when i want to get rid of things, i just do; no more sorting, just throw out. i get more done that way :)

I am working on it.... I am getting a bit better at letting stuff go, as long as it goes quickly1

I am the sentimental guy who keeps things because of the memories attached to it. I find it really hard to throw away things like presents from pas girlfriends away, I would stash it away somewhere in my room even though I know that I would never ever use it. On deciding what stays and what goes to the trash bin, it really depends on the importance of the thing in question. Like books perhaps, I rarely give away my books especially the ones that are related to my studies. I always see students selling off their books as soon as their semester ends. I like to keep my old books just in case I need to refer to them back. I have to admit I do keep useless stuff though like movie ticket butts or concert ticket butts. I also keep the tickets I have gotten from a trip like train tickets when I went to UK or the museum tickets when I was in South Korea. When it comes to broken stuff, well, I will try to repair them before throwing them away. I have to admit that I have some repairing skills I have gotten from helping m y dad with things at home before. The same goes for old clothes. I usually just keep in them for the 'just in case' reason.

I like to hold onto books but I have managed to let go of a few that have outlived their usefulness to me &, in my car, I still have a numer of 'pay & display' parking tickets i've purchased when visiting my son over the last 5 years. He keeps telling me that i dont have to keep things just because he bought them for me but, I LIKE my glow-in-the-dark octopus, inflatable penguin, toy farm, Snoopy Christmas tree.....

I was a hoarder, a serial hoarder, everything'might come in handy one day', but four years ago we moved from a four bedroomed Victorian house to a park home, I was FORCED to be the ultimate Mr Ruthless!!! Oh and what a job, I had almost 40 years of clutter - I gave a lot of sentimental stuff that I was planning on leaving to my kids to them now, I dumped all my photographs ( piles of them) between my three oldest daughters. I gave loads away, sold loads and after several soul destroying weeks got rid of it all!!

I am told that we are not going to be 'downsizing' - but, we'll be putting a tent up in the garden to make room for either us or our stuff before much longer. When my brother moved in with his fiancee, he got rid of loads of stuff that he'd collected over the years - some he sold to raise cash for the new place and some just had to go to make room.
