Why does capitalism works( as well as it does)?

If it were not for reformers and meddling politicians, meddling politicians are responsible for the government intervention. Why isn't capitalism a dehumanzing despotism? The ideal that a unmitigated capitalism led to our high standard of living is a load of shyt.
