Let me see if I got this right.
Nuclear family = Immediate family under one roof.(Mom,dad, siblings, and self)
Joint family = Extended family under one roof.(Grandparents, parents siblings and families, and your immediate family)
The claim is that with a joint family they can all help one another when and if needed. A nuclear family can not.
If this is correct than the problem is not with the class of family you have rather with the family itself.
I come from what you call a nuclear family and we are always helping, talking, playing, and just over all doing things together. The problem is not the class but of the closeness of the family. My family may be all over the country but we are all very close to each other.
But as human beings we do need our down time as well. The time that is just us and no one else. With a joint family like you describe that is very difficult to obtain. Also in that kind of a family unit the need for that down time begins to appear more often. This can lead to a great deal of stress in a short amount of time. So for me the nuclear family idea with a close nit family is best.

Joint family has its advantages, the first being the advices we get from the elders.Grandfathers and grand moms will be helpful in making some crucial decisions. And the relatives all ling together especially during festivals will be great.
but there are disadvantages also, there is no privacy and there may be authority shown on the younger ones by the elders.
these days nuclear families or small families are better.
