The question is a bit vague... Choice is basically between colour inkjet and mono (Black and white) laser. I have had lots of printers over the past 15 years, but I work them hard, usually they die of old age, like cars. Lasers I would recommend a low to mid range Brother, especially if you are looking for two sided printing. Colour I think a mid range Canon, 4 or 5 ink tanks is best option. The Canon ink is reasonable and you can force it to print another 50 sheets even after it says it is empty.

It depends on what your needs are. Some printers are designed for graphics like photos and other stuff so people who work closely with graphics often buy and use these type of printers. Majority of people just like to print documents and papers, so they go to the printer without the additional features. Offices often buy multitasking printers - printers that have scanner and additional features for office use. It really depends on how you use the printer and what kind of result you are expecting the printer to accomplish.
