one thing has never escaped my curiosity. i always read in the bible that people like mosses, Jacob, Abraham, Methuselah lived to be old as much as 900 years old! what puzzles me is that how were these people counting days, months and years such that one is capable of living such long.does it mean that they were likely to be more healthier that us today? or it depended on the foodstuff they ate? the oldest person today in the world cannot live more than 120 years old and if he/she is there then they are few or not existing. if they are there then what is the secret? by the way in your household or neighborhood who is the oldest person and by how may years?

there are several aspects here .. the sight of age as wisdom - something we forget too readily these days - so it's a guage of the 'relative' age to experience of life.. and the calendar used was shorter than ours so they were considered older

One theory is that when Adam and Eve sinned and God said they will surely die, it took a little later for it to set in and as the generations grew, the life span got shorter.
Another theory is that after the Flood, the belt around the Earth that was largely water and protected the Earth from the solar radiation disappeared because of the Great Flood. The result is that the Oceans that were not that deep, suddenly become much deeper, ice bergs formed, etc. because of all that excess water. Another result was that the great Flood caused the earth to tip, so the temperature was not equally distributed and not all people could eat the food that before ensured a longer life - especially those in the northern climates. As a result their life span decreased. You notice in the Bible, and the old Testament especially people had fairly long lives. If there were a record of people in the Northern climates, they would speak of them living to be 50 at the most. So in part it was the climate. Much of the food that ensures a long life and excellent health is grown in and around the Equator or in the sub tropical climates.
I do have an uncle or great uncle who is over 102 years old. That was a couple of years ago. And my maternal great grandmother lived to 99. so far that is the only information I have. But they lived elsewhere.

Hey mcowiti,
Well yeah they where probably healthier. So it is plausible that they lived that long. Today, we have a lot of variations of food, most foods are packed with preservatives, chemicals etc. In their time the most common food was fruits, which is what i believe mother nature intended us to eat. Eat fruits, carry the seeds and plant some more. If we eat fruits, vegetables and organic food i can guarantee that our life span would increase.

I've heard from a so called expert that maybe the counting of age way back then is different than now. Those people in the bible said they've lived for 900 years? The expert said that the years before are counted as months. for example, 900 years is supposed to be 900 months and a year has 12 months so 900 months is equal to 75 years? lol. so the bible people may have lived for 75 years if we consider the 900 years as 900 months. About their diet, It can be a good factor to have a longer life. try comparing a a person who eats healthy foods and a person who eats unhealthy foods. :D
