Is it True???

The other evening some friends and I were talking about a subject we usually do not discuss and that was Politics. One of my friends said "We have been told that Religious Converts often turn into Religious Fanatic but our friend here (me) has turned from a Naturalized Citizen to a Political Fanatic"!! I did not say too much at the time but I did not care for the comparison... could it be true?? I thought I just had a healthy curiosity and opinion about the Politics of my CHOSEN country

Every citizen of any country should be involved in politics!! Only then can we have decent government that works for the good of the citizens, not their own good. Point out to your friend that because of our general non-involvement in politics for the past few decades, we now have a government who is testing the waters of oppression of free speech while continuing the bankrupting of our nation that it vowed to correct. You are not a fanatic. You see something is wrong and you, like many of us, are frantically calling for action and trying to get people involved. I thank you for your efforts! By the way, where did you immigrate from? Do you ever miss it? Why did you immigrate and are you glad you did?

I was born and raised in Scotland but before coming to America (with my American husband) I lived and worked for the USAF for 4 years in Tripoli, Libya. Toured all over Europe and Scandinavia for 6 years, lived in France and Switzerland for 4 more years all with my first (German) husband who was in show business. Then worked for 8 years for the US-Army in Germany where I met my American husband. Wow I get tired just reminiscing!!

I knew you had lived in Libya and Germany but not your birth country. Scotland is so beautiful from the pictures I have seen! I met several people from there over the years when I was in Arizona and they were absolutely delightful. I'm glad you are here and love it!

I will join your other friends in saying that you are not a fanatic. That has a rather negative connotation. I really admire the interest that you take in politics. You could be an excellent example to many.

Sometimes and even a lot of times that happens but not all of the time. My husband was raised Lutheran and converted to Mormon. I was raised Presbyterian and still am. He has never tried to convert me. If he did, I'd really give him hell.

I would imagine that the people you interact with in your real life know you a lot better than the folks here and have had more opportunities to form general opinions based on many factors. Since you don't normally discuss politics with this group, perhaps a change was noted that did compare to religious fanatics. One person's healthy curiosity and opinions can be another person's fanaticism.

Haha, relax, you're not fanatic. :) Probably they're just not used to you discussing that subject. Maybe they're not used to seeing you have a healthy interest for politics.

That's true they are not used to hearing me discussing Politics. I already lost one friend in a political argument. Growing up I was taught that in polite circles one does not discuss religion or politics. So I will remember that again!

Most converts are a little fanatical about their support of a new organization (religion, country, etc) when they are first accepted into the organization. Most of them mellow over the years. They still support it; but, not so vehemently. However, there are a few people who were fanatics before they convert and just switch the focus of their fanaticism. They will continue to be fanatics until the day they die. So, unless you were a fanatic before you became a naturalized citizen, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If some on MyLot agree that you're a political fanatic, then they'd have to admit that they are too. I don't think you discuss politics any more or less than the rest of us. So we're either all curious or fanatics...and I personally don't feel like a fanatic.
