I am proud of my son and his wife.

My son and his wife are pregnant. The other day, they get called by the doctor and they have to go for another ultrasound. Why? There's a chance they could be having a down syndrome baby. 12% but it's still a chance. They were given a referral to Vancouver with the idea of amniocentesis and an abortion. I am proud because they said no they are going and termination is not an option. Even when the ultrasound tech insisted, they said "Are you not listening? TERMINATION IS NOT AN OPTION." I am proud of my son. We brought him up right.

And the subsequent tests showed everything is good. Somebody is mistaken.

I can see that you would be, so would I, they seem a lovely couple. I had my son when I was 45 so I knew that my age could mean that he would be born with Downs Syndrome, but I refused the amnio test because I would never have had a termination anyway, not when I had felt him move in my body. They did do the triple test on me and I remember the day that two midwives came round with long miserable faces saying that there was an extremely high chance that he would be born with downs. Again they recommended the test, again I said NO. Thankfully my son was born healthy and well, his description in hospital was a 'bouncing, baby, boy' Good luck to you and your family with the birth.

I have heard so many horror stories of amnio tests. And they just are not willing to give up this baby. Marie has wanted baby for so long, this is good for her. And I am happy for them both.

And so you should be! :) He sounds like a great man, and so does his wife. I am 21 weeks pregnant at the moment and have just had the test to see if our baby has a chance of downs syndrome, we had the test so that if it was a high possibility we could get used to the idea, read up about support we can get in the form of groups and how it will affect their lives as a child. But abortion would NEVER have been an option for us, a downs syndrome child does not have to live a "bad" life, and can these days get by in life just as well as someone without downs. Also for your sons sake, my mother had my brother 14 years ago and had the test to see how likely it was for my brother to have downs, the test came back as High, meaning there was a VERY high chance (more than 12%) of him been downs syndrome, when born, he was not downs syndrome, my mother could have aborted him, a healthy child with nothing wrong with him!! Also, do your son and his wife know that the amniocentesis can cause miscarriage? It may not be something they are told in the US, but here we are warned of a 1% chance of miscarriage when an amniocentesis is taken out due to the infiltration of the placenta, if I was them, I would continue with the pregnancy knowing there will be a chance, and find out when the child is born- if it won't make any difference to them either way, then I wouldn't risk a miscarriage to find out. :) xx

Yes. they know about miscarriage too. That was another consideration for them not going to do it.

Congratulations! I think its a blessing to have the baby. Sorry to hear that there's a chance for the baby to get down's syndrome but its just 12%, you have more chances of not getting it. And yeah! Termination is not an option so hold on to it. I always have faith in things like this and just tell your daughter in law to keep herself healthy at all times. Good luck to you and your family.

We figure it is a false alarm anyway. But the blessing is on it's way regardless.

That is great mike..I am glad they are not taking that option. 12% is not high..but even so if it were 75% or higher it shouldn't matter..they told my niece the same thing she went ahead with the pregnancy also..and when her daughter was born she didn't have down syndrome but we later found out that she had Cystic Fibrosis.

you really brought him up right and he will be a good father to your grandchild. I wish that there'll be more father like you who'll teach and guide their kids on the right path. So that there'll be more sons and daughters like your own son.. happy mylotting..
