Do you allow your children under 10 years old to watch horror movies?

I posted this discussion because, on my way home last night, while I was riding the bus. A video was on, most of the buses here have free movies going during the long trip. But it was a horror movie.
A mother and her 4 or 5 years old daughter came on the bus. And she let her daughter sat next to me. She was smiling and so giggly about her riding the bus. And I remember that my own daughter, don't like horror movies. So I said to her, to close her eyes because there was a monster in the movie. She grinned at me and said "Oh really?!". And her mother, while smiling, told her that it was not a movie for children and she should not watched.
But to my dismay, they moved to seats in front of the bus, nearer to the video. And she let her daughter stand on the chair to have a better view of the movie. She didn't even payed attention to her daughter that was wide eyed, glued on the blood and biting going on. She was on the phone.
That movie got a rating of PG13 or that Parental Guidance is required for children under thirteen years old. I don't allow my daughter to watch horror movies, even if others would considered it mild. Because I think their young mind are not yet ready for such raw images. Even if they close their eyes during bloody scenes. They will get a glimpse of it. And, at that young age, these images could be damaging to them.
I don't know if I am too bundled up about it. But I think that killing, stabbing, biting, blood, gushing wounds and others are not funny matters that young children should take as entertaining, or only in the concept of fiction. Because they might have an unreal sense of death. And now, even young people are killing each other, shooting to other students, stucking them into walls...etc..,
What do you think about it? Was it right for that mother to be unattentive to her daughter watching this movie? And not even explaining what's in the movie, what is bad or good?
How about you, do you let your children, nephews or nieces watch those kind of movies alone? Or guided?

I think it is up to the parents discretion. My daughter was 13 before she could watch pg-13 movies. But a friend of mine had her daughter watching scary movies at about 5. Who am I to say how she parents. Our girls are now 16 and best friends.

Hi Laglen! I agree you can't say to others how to parent their child. What I meant was will you allow it if it was your child? And why yes or not? (^^,)

Well I wouldn't let my daughters watch scary movies at an early age. However, my daughter and her husband allow their 4 year old daughter to watch. She loves the scary movies but does cover her eyes when she gets scared. Her parents do constantly tell her this is all fake and not really happening but I don't know how much of effect it is having on her. I just think she is still to young but I'm not the parent I'm only the grandmother.

I also don't allow my daughter to watch scary movies, especially if I know how disturbing some of the scenes can be. At least your granddaughter is guided by her parents. Which I admire. I always feel that at least we have to explain, guide them through what they are watching and seeing. Thank you for you response Lelin. Happy Mother's day by the way. (^^,)

None of us at my house enjoyed scary movies, so my kids did not watch them, unless they chose to after they were grown. I do not think my daughter does, and my son probably prefers some other genre. I know I was spooked by Twilight Zone when I was a little kid, but my family always watched it, together. It was very tame compared to todays movies and shows.

I agree with you GardenGerty. Horror movies back then were tame compare to the scary movies now. I remember my first horror movie when I was a child was Poltergeist. And I was really spooked about it. But when you compare it to today's movies. It looks like very classic and simple. I think also, it is always the best to watch any movies as a family. So the children are well guided. Thank you GardenGerty. (^^,)

Thank you Dawnald! Yes, Twilight is very borderline, compare to the horror movies we have these days. Now, there is too much violence, adult activities etc..(^^,)
