Why does the Tmobile G1 have so little internal memory

Have you got a Tmobile G1 made my HTC with the new Android mobile operating system? Is it just me or has the phone been blessed with completely inadequate internal memory. I can't believe that this phone was once called and "iphone killer" I mean come on, the iphone has gigabytes of memory and never crashes, whereas the G1 has 74 megabytes of memory to which you can intall apps. I was very excited when I first got the phone but it only took a few weeks before it started crashing and hanging frequently. After some investigation it turns out that this is because the internal memory is now full. The reason for this is that you can only install apps to the internal memory and not to the sd card. This phone had so much potential but was let down massively by the meager ration of internal memory. Has anyone else encountered similar problems?
