I'm a student and i use my laptop alot for school, which is a HP so its obviously a pc and it comes in handy a lot, but at my school we have macs and teachers prefer them over a pc. so can someone help me figure out which one is better for a student?

HP laptops are working well for students.I'm also a student and using a HP Laptop and have no complaints regarding its functions & performance. Its only you who can figure out your needs. So if you are suitable with hp then remain with it.No need to buy a mac.And dont listen too much to your friends/teachers just follow your heart & your own thinking.

This could be a good tip, but maybe the teachers and friends may know something too, because they only want his/her best...
Of course the final decision should always be made by yourself

Definitely a Mac! I am a student myself, and I just love Macs and everything else that Apple makes! Of course you shouldn't buy one just because I say so, but because you want so yourself.
Your teachers may be right about Macs, because they (Macs) have the best user satisfaction, and they just are great for all creative users and especially all artists, audio, video and photo editors and writers. Actually... Almost every "professional" that I see around the globe use them, and mostly in TV. Apple is promoting it's computers a lot in all kinds of TV shows, but also other people use Macs without being said so (the ones that are in TV).
And last but not least... Apple has a reduction on their Macs for all students over 18 years! I think that that is great news for you, isn't it?
