Why are shop assistants these days so snobbish?

Hi, friends. Have you ever had such an experience that you were treated rudely by a snobbish shop assistant just because of your casual wear? These days, some sales persons are just so snobbish and judge customers by their clothes. I've seen numerous times that farmers are quite neglected in shopping. Sales persons are more willing to serve somebody. Only seeing those sales persons flattering VIP makes me sick. One thing they don't know is many rich people prefer to be casual in clothing, which disguises their real financial state. One of my colleagues who earns much once went to a big shopping mall. She didn't expect to be treated badly only because of her clothing, but it actually happened. The shop assistant took no notice of her questions and ended up being complained against. I believe she had learned a lesson from that experience and remembered not to judge people by what they wear.

I hate being followed around too. It makes me feel ill at ease in a shop assistant's presence. I feel like being spied on. Whatever I buy, I'm afraid he/she is thinking about something. Sometimes I even stop buying what I want and go to other shops. The shop assistants just don't know that being too hospitable can be a problem too.

I haven't experienced being treated badly in a shop or store, but I've seen several snobbish sales persons. I just don't get affected because whenever I shop I don't really want to be bothered by them. I just talk to them whenever I need their services. I've heard people treated badly by a sales person, and I think they should be reprimanded by their managers. Sales persons should be nice and accommodating. Whatever occupation you have, you should learn to love it and you should do your job properly.

That's so true! I don't know why people would apply as shop assistant, service crew or janitor if they can't take to serve others, especially clients. For shop assistants or sales ladys, I think they are usually annoying in our country... They keep on following you around. But I have seen bad services from service crews in fast food shops. And I worked as one too before so I understand that they might be tired. But in the morning, it is annoying to see service crews with a long face and not even willing to clean the tables when you asked them. Where is the manager?

Hi Chenxiaoyue! Here in my country, shope assistants are not snobbish at all. But they are very annoying, because they always follow you around. And they offer this bag or these shoes. And after reading your discussion, I feel blessed that I haven't encounter a snobbich shop assistants. I think that would be more annoying than a sticky shop assistant. And it is not fair, to be treated so snobbishly. Because, a customer is a customer. As little money he has, a sale is a sale. And profit is profit. They should always bear that in mind. And it is their job to assist customers. Your friend was right to complain. (^^,)

I'd rather be followed around than be ill-treated. Being followed around means they really respect you though their intention is to get you buy something. There are lots of snobbish assistants in my country. Sometimes, I feel sympathized with those low-income people who are treated badly just because of their financial state.

That's so sad, yes, to be treated so badly just because you have a low or average income. Here in my country, every one is always assisted or followed around. You got some few not snobbish but maybe tire and grumpy assistant. But you usually get what you are inquiring. Maybe those shop assistant should be reported often to their supervisor. So that the mall there, will be aware that it is a big problem. (^^,)

Because they think that those who wear clothes like of the farmer doesnt have any money to buy but they didnt know this farmer has more money than those who wear fancy clothes. I hate when sales persons are like that.

I absolutely agree with you. In my country people wear fancy clothes to con others. They need to look good so people believe them.

Oh is so true, some people at stores tend to suddenly think that because they make that $8 dollar an hour, that gives them the right to treat patrons like dirt. They forget its because of patrons that they get that miserable job to pay their bills in the first place. Good on your friend for complaining about it.

Those shop assistants make a very low income, but they just regard themselves as superior and like to look down upon people who happen to be indifferent to what they wear. Only those who are shallow behave in such a way. Whenever I come upon such an assistant, I feel like teaching him/her a lesson to make him/her realize his/her insignificance.

Oh yes I know what you mean, that is so degrading and tests your patience for sure. I am more likely to put them on their place. I take no lip from anyone, specially in those situations.

There are so many sales ladies here in our place who are exactly what you described in your post. I hate it when they do that cause they are going to think highly about themselves. I never make them do that to me after experiencing something like that a few years back. I think I am also a b**** if someone wont respect me especially if I showed them respect. If I notice the sales lady doing that to me, then I do more things that will annoy her more. lol

That's a good idea. There's a proverb in my country which says "deal with a man as he deals with you" which is a perfect way to deal with rude and snobbish assistants. I once read an article about a woman's experience in buying an expensive dress. She went to a store wearing jeans the first time and was treated rather rudely when she asked to see a very expensive dress. She was irritated and returned back to that store the next day wearing fashionable clothes with a handbag in her hand. Then she found the same assistant who could no longer recognize her asked to see the same dress. Of course, she was paid great respect this time. But she refused to buy that dress which was taken out with great difficulty by the assistant. She told the assistant she didn't like it. Just imagine what's on the assistant's mind at that moment.

Oh I so agree with you. There are a lot of those types of sales persons. Its really annoying, and to think that they should be nice to customer's cause without us then they would have no job.

Exactly. It is customers who give them the chance of having a job, but shop assistants seem to show no gratitude to customers who are supposed to be treated like God. I've seen many times that an assistant behaves rudely to customers, especially when customers ask him/her too many questions. I chose to tolerate such behavior before, but now I argue with him/her whenever I'm treatedly badly. If I refuse to buy the goods because of his/her ill-treatment, it is him/her who will lose, not me. A wise assistant will never lose the chance of selling a product.

Recently I went to an optical shop, entered the shop,no one person in the counter. Asked many times in the silent ,a clerk ran out and asked me if I wanted to buy glasses.I am in that yellow lenses to solve problims ,several clerks suddenly ran out from the room. And so many sentences to me,just take me drown! I repeatedly stated in the next, the clerk insisted that the lenses are like this! And a staff ,some big sister, actually said:"The glsses you used within one year certainly will turn yellow in!" Do not be angry, poor staff is like that.

It's not only because of what you wear i think. It's a general attitude we see more and more. I asked for something in the supermarket. The answer: "well, if it's not there, then we don't have it ehh?" Those people only work for their money but have no bond with the shop.
