Irresponsible Dog Owners!

Philippines

It was the first time I tried walking my pup out in the neighborhood as she has been fearful going out. But I'm sad the experience for her was unpleasant. There are so many irresponsible dog owners in my village, so many untrained and aggressive dogs. They let their dogs roam around the streets and these mutts terrorizes everybody walking on the street. Some people get fearful they would be bitten by non vaccinated dogs. Well as I was walking Louise someone's dog became very aggressive and charged towards us without being provoked while it's owner sat and watched! Good thing I brought with me a steel bar because this one particular dog would not go away and continues to charge. I know this sounds so cruel but I had no choice but hit the dog with the metal rod and he went yelping back to his owner. And I said something really harsh to the owner! I mean how dare he leave his gate open and just watch his dogs charged upon a poor passerby walking her dog! I intend to file a complain at the local government unit in my village and asked that irresponsible owners be penalized if not go to prison. I mean these dogs are unvaccinated, aggressive and who knows who it will attack next. What other suggestions can you give?

Hello if you visit my place you can see tons of stray dogs on the street, they have no owner, they bite people on road, two years ago one bite my son's foot, when he was going office on his scooter, he had to take those painful injections later we learnt it had a owner, who set it loose, certainly a total irresponsible owner.. Thanks for sharing. God bless you. Cheers. Prof

I am so sorry to hear that Bhuwan. I have been bitten by a dog twice in this neighborhood when I was little girl running errands for my parents. I had to take those vaccinations too like your son and it was traumatic for a 10 year old girl. Maybe you can write a petition too just like what I'm doing right now. There is no way you all have to just live with this. Either those dogs get to be rehabilitated or put to sleep.

Put in a report to the police and/or animal control. The owner should receive a summons to appear in court and although it's the owner who is being irresponsible, the dog may be put down. Check with your neighbors to see if anyone else has had a meeting with this particular dog and owner. If so, ask if they will give reports to the police/animal control, too.

I know if my hubby and I came across a vicious dog such as the one you're describing, he would have snapped the dog's neck and killed it and then probably beat up the owner too. I think that's a form of assault from the owner. Sounds like that neighborhood should wake up and smell the coffee. That's terrible! You can tell that those dog owners are neglectant of their dogs. I'm glad you were carrying a bar with you to defend your dog and yourself, especually if the other dog is not vacsinated? Wow I also think you should report this to the authorities forsure! Clean up that neighborhood because you would be doing everyone a favor. Take care

I do get scared walking my dogs at times, as the neighborhood that I walk in has some pretty large dogs in it, but I must admit, that when the owners see my walking my dogs, they will make sure that their dog doesn't leave their yard. I am happy for that, as most of the dogs are rotties and I am scared of them as well as pit bulls. Why people want them as pets when they can be mean and vicious is beyond me. Anyway, I had run in with a boxer one day, and I thought sure it was going to bite me and my dogs. It was running around me trying to get at them, and I just kept screaming as the boy that let the dog go, to get it, and all he could do was scream too, and ask his friend or brother to help him, as he just stood there and let the dog do what he was doing. I was literally shaking after I encountered that dog, and I have never encountered it since, and boy am I glad of that. Take care, and happy mylotting.

I haven't watch Cesar in a long time, but he is really good, as there isn't any dog that he can't control. I have tried to incorporate some of his tips into the way I handle them. Now, when it comes to them walking beside me, they do that well, as I grab hte leash way down so that I can control them better, and when they start acting up, I will yank on the leash to get them under control. I have that part down really well. Now just to get them to stop barking so much. I am working on that too, but no success at of yet.

Hello Candyfairy, Its really a bad experience you had. I personally like dogs of all kind, but being attacked by one is one of the most unpleasant experiences you can have. In my country this kind of situations are common, especially in more remote areas. There is no laws for it, so everybody does what they want. In theses cases the fault is always of the owner, so if you can file a complain, I think you should go for it. And it should serve as an example. The victims in these cases are always the dogs. They are the image of the owners.

Thanks alocure, thanks for dropping by. I know it was cruel but the other dog was trying to bite my pup and me as well. Yes I feared that my pup would get hurt and so would I. Nope they do not rent but owns the place. They have like 5 dogs but not taken care of by that I mean that they don't bathe them, or feed them the right dog foos they gave them table scraps and leave them alone to wander around the neighborhood which puts everyone in danger.

I have been thinking about that too! I am going to the local office here and file my petition tomorrow as far as I know this is now an ordinance in our city but no official has been keen on following this. They do it when they want to. But anyway I'm gonna give it a try. wish me luck!

An dog owner who stands by and does nothing but watch while another dog owner and they're dog is charged and even possibly beaten should not have the privilege of owning the dog. Plain and simple, if your not going to do anything, even if it's just screaming then you needn't be a dog owner, atleast not of an aggressive breed.

I totally agree with you there cowgirl! You are 101% right to the point!

Thats why im afraid to walk my own dog. luckily i have my son here to do it. even if i could breathe just walking around the neighborhood i dont know what id do if one came charging. im not sure i could make it back to the house carrying her. ive heard you can carry a citrus spray that will ward them off but i couldnt swear to it.

citrus spray I'm gonna try that. I usually bring a stick or a heavy metal because there are just too many aggressive dogs around! Just imagine 4 to 5 dogs charging on you...I guess my mother's instinct came through at that situation, it was like I'm trying to protect my own child from harm. Here in my place people need more awareness and pet education. People just treat dogs merely as guard dogs but not well taken care. When people on the street looks at my dog they ohh and ahh. They are just surprised that I do this and that for my dog. Like my dog gets groomed monthly by the groomers in my vet and that my dog gets a shampoo and conditioner as well as deodorizer and even a toothpaste and a toothbrush! All these seems new to me so I am more than interested now to start a doggie awareness in my place but with that I would need to get seminars.

To many people want animals but DO NOT WANT TO CARE OF THEM PROPERLY. Care, feeding training and health care. When people get a pet they should take proper care so others can appreciate how good pets can be... REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U..

That's right big daddy! Those kind of people should not have pets if they are not committed to take care of them in the first place! When someone brings home a pet they should take care of it and be committed in their heart to take care of it.

In my country you have to vaccinate your dog against rabies every year. If you donĀ“t have your certificate up to date and the dog bites someone, you can go to jail and the dog to the pound. It is also illegal to walk a dog without lash but not many pay attention to that. I have to, because Lola is much too friendly and is a big german shepheard.

At least your local officials are keen on carrying out the rules. Well this is part of responsible pet ownership and that people who wants to have pets should abide by the law and provide a good home for the dog. I hope we all would do that here.

Since you were being attacked by the other dog, I think I would have done the same thing that you did. I don't know if there are any kind of dog ordinances in the area that you live in, but if there are, then the best thing that you can do for the future is report the dogs that are not on leashes, in fenced yards, etc and let the government take care of it. Unfortunately there is nothing that you can do about it by taking the law into your own hands.

I do not know why some people are so irresponsible. Between dog and human feelings can be traced back thousands of years, people have reason to believe that ,in future, felings between the Azeri and the dog will continue.None kind of animal like a dog in so many ways to serve us :the dog dutifully for our grazing animals;took us across the planet's most remote corners of the coldest...Price:$5 to $100 million. With 1,000 times more sensitive than our sense of smell, dogs can ,after an avalanche buried in the snow under the pepople who search out the collapse in housing to the pepople trapped in th rubble to rescue,in the depths of the forest lost who lesd them.

wow where do you live? in my state (maine) I think we have laws in every city that dogs outside must be kept on leashes AT ALL TIMES. thats just crazy to think that some places dont have those laws. and theres nothing more that I hate then an irresponsible dog owner, makes me wanna slap them
• Philippines

I live halfway around the world from you. There are city ordinances but the local officials are not keen on carrying them out unless somebody has been reportedly bitten or there are rabies cases in our place, which would have not have happened in the first place if dogs were vaccinated with anti rabies vaccine. I feel like you do I wanna slap these irresponsible dog owners. Not only are their dogs a menace to the neighborhood but it poses a great risk as to contracting rabies from a bite.

I believe your course of action is the best way to handle this. This is what we do when there is a dog left loose that attacks, we report it. This is probably the only way to deal with.

Hi candyfairy, you made a good move; I mean hurting the dog with a steel bar is a kind of discipline not only to the dog but also for the owner. I think you should file a complain too. And you have to bring your steel bar always. I don't want to be mean, it's just some sort of security because there are some tactless people who don't want to understand.

That's why I don't go walking through the neighborhood anymore. Because, around this town nobody thinks they have to lease their dogs. So, they are roaming around in their neighborhood and terrizing the walkers. And, most of these dogs are not small by any means, they are fairly good size. I'm not much of a dog fanatic to begin with, and if I don't know the dog I'm not going to go in that direction.
