Herding chickens

For those of you who talk to me often, you will remember how I felt about the adoption of our Chicken flock. I moaned, and ranted and cryed about the introduction of chickens to our ranch. For months now I hae had nothing to do with these chickens, yes they are the prettiest chickens I've ever seen, they look so pretty in the Spring green grass that I have to stop my car to watch them sometimes.
But guess what I spend a good hour with a broom herding these same hated chickens into their pen to avoid a coming storm. The darn things ran everywhich way to avoid an early end to their day of freedom. I was out there in my nightgown and slippers, (by the way I can tell you another reason they call them slippers) chasing these D**"$ chickens. I got trapped into this, I had gone out to get Hubby to tell him to call his friend, I was ready for bed, in desperation he yells at me HELP GET THESE CHICKENS IN THEIR PEN. I say who me? I'm out here in my night cloths, all he says if GRAB THE BROOM and sweep them toward the gate. Needless to say one hour later, the chickens are penned, I am pissed and Hubby then says what took you so long. ALL I COULD SAY WAS, "I DON'T DO CHICKENS' and went on to bed. He was laughting when he came in the house. That is how my Mother's day ended, I guess now I'll be known as the Mother of chickens. Good ending, I get great fresh eggs.

" I moaned, and ranted and cryed about the introduction of chickens to our ranch."
Sounds a bit mad, are you some sort of henophobic?

Evolution by natural selection in action, clever chickens learn to roost in trees! Those that don't perish happy in the knowledge that they are helping to breed a more intelligent breed of Chickens, one step closer to total henomony and world domination

I'm sorry but that picture is laughable!! Could you not have thrown some grain in the pen to attract them? I have never had to herd chickens, only cows, but I imagine it is a difficult job! I hope you enjoy your eggs.

Oh dear…It sound as though it must have been quite a sight! You poor thing having to chase a bunch of chickens around in order to ‘sweep’ them back into their pen and I love your husband yelling to you to take care of the chickens; it’s like, “what the heck do you doing I’m trying to do?” I hope you managed to have a laugh about it afterwards!

Lol pat, well I wish the end to your mother's day was more enjoyable. At least you got a husband with a good attitude. He gave you a laugh at the end of the day. Hopefully he was laughing with you and not at you.
It is funny how your are having to herd chickens.
We never have had to do this.
We simply feed them in their pen and they come running. Once they are all in, we shut the gate.
I am not very chicken experienced but that is what we have done.
You are right! That the bonus of having chickens is the fresh free range eggs.
They are fun to watch and are some very nice looking chickens to be had.
I hope that within time, your chickens will come running when you want them in their pen. Try taking grain into their pen at the same time each night, calling them, shaking a can of food, sprinkling to the ground as they come in. Within time they will come to know that it is feeding time, before bed..? I am not sure, just a thought. Hopefully this will prove to be helpful toward the chicken herding success. No more brooms and bed cloths for you :)

LOL...well THAT was a visual!
My parents went through a chicken phase when I was a teenager, mostly thanks to an uncle who gave us kids colorful chicks for Easter. They weren't supposed to be running around free in the back yard but I can remember a few times that they managed to excape their pen and we had to herd them back in. It's definitely not easy to do. Happy Mother's Day Momma Hen.

Hey pat! That must have been quite a sight! I can just imagine
you with a broom trying to "sweep" the chickens, who wanted
nothing to do with going inside into their pen! I guess it could
have been worse? Could have been the Llamas! I hope you enjoyed
your Mother's Day and the chickens made it up to you by giving
you plenty of nice eggs!lol
