Sound advice on sports betting?

I have been an avid follower of all sports for many years and have recently found myself drawn to betting on sports but im the sort of person that i wont actually place bets until im very confident of my chances so can anybody give me some sound and straight forward advice that will stand me in good stead for my future hobby of sports betting,Thank you for any help.

Betting of any kind is a gamble ... thus the term "gambling". If you are going to bet on it, then I definitely would suggest betting small amounts that you will not mind losing. You have to bet with the assumption that you are going to lose, because you will - maybe not all the time but you will definitely lose eventually. If you can afford to lose $5 without a problem, then that is a safe amount to bet. If you have an addictive personality, though, then it really is best to avoid betting, because it really can be addictive, especially if you happen to win a couple of times.
