Talking English is a requirement to be a senator? We live in the Philippines for Pete's sake! There is nothing wrong in speaking our native language, If given a chance I want the elected officials to speak Tagalog so all Filipino can understand them clearly.

There are pros and cons regarding this issue. Yes, I think they should talk in our native language when the topic is a national concern especially during hearings or meetings so that even the simple-minded Filipinos can understand what's going on. But when it comes to knowing how to speak English, I think it's a requirement that every senator must know how to do so fluently since it's our second language and it is taught at an early age in school. They are the representatives of the nation and when they go abroad and interact with foreigners, the way they talk and act reflects back on the Filipino people. Don't you think it's a plus quality that might impress foreigners that they want to invest here in the Philippines since they know they can speak comfortably with us?

Japan can interact well with other country and they are not good in English.
Japanese official do not know English but they are well respected in other country. Their knowledge in English does not reflect back on Japanese people. Investors look at the government policy not the language.
I agree that being fluent in English will be a plus points to foreigners. Good for tourism.

That's the irony of life...If you're popular and have the money and influence, then people will vote you even if you don't have the qualifications/abilities to hold a public position. That's how politics sometimes go in our country. It's a simple game of popularity contest...

I agree with you ajarvaise. Just like what happen to presidential elections now, the least qualified one will win because of media hype and sympathy votes.

Well I think it is like what Erap, Revilla has in them. They have long exposed themselves to the public as famous stars. It is much easier for voters who do not think seriously but requires only familiarization of names. They have charmed the public long time ago and they still are to this day.
I really hope that the voters would finally think of who they are voting and not just personalities.

I'm also wonder why other Filipinos vote him because he is useless in the senate. He can't even understand English well in even understanding the law he needs translator. We can't do anything about it because some Filipinos like him even if he is like a decoration in the Senate.

i'm not a fan and i didn't vote him but he's already there so let us just support and help him. to serve the country, you must first have the heart for doing that and after that is to learn the things you need to learn. he can learn english if he wants to so as long as you are eager to help and change the philippines, o think we must let him prove that he can be a good senator.

Simply because he's one of the senators that the INC endorsed. Its almost a sure win if the INC endorses you since they vote in bloc. And also of course there are still Filipinos that will vote for someone because he/she is a star and didn't think if he/she really deserves the post.

Don't you dare discriminate him.
remember he was a Governor too before he went in the senate. Compare to this winner Noynoy, he was able to at least Enact ONE LAW, unlike Noynoy where he submitted nine laws and none of them have been approved yet.

and He's no Big Spender like that Manny Villar. i agree that he was an actor once but he proved himself overtime in the executive and legislative positions. i trust him. as well as santiago and cayetano.
you should be watching senate hearings and check if they have pass laws. that is important.
