does music help you to study?

I was taking a class about this and the thought came to my attention that maybe I should ask others what they think about music and studying? Do you need music to be more productive when it comes to school work or studying? If so can you explain why? If not please explain that as well.

As for me I cannot concentrate when there is music on the background. I do well in an area wherein there is no music and no distraction whatsoever. What happens when there is music is I keep singing along to it. So, it's always a rule for me when I study I go lock the door of my room and study or else go to another place like a library where there are no beds around lol and no noise too.

I understand how not being around a bed can be beneficial, I used to fall asleep when studying all the time. Even now I fall asleep when reading once in a while.

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. Whenever I study, I get bored and listening to some music help me lessen the feeling of boredom. On the other hand, it's distracting. Whenever I use music while I study, I ended up listening to the music more than reading the book. I guess it would work better if I'm not so easily distracted.

When I was in highschool there was noway that I could study without music. I wanted the music on even when I was going to bed. Now that I am older..I guess I kind of got out of that habit. I am taking Algebra right now and it's not a bad idea to put on some music..lol..maybe it will help me.

Hi Mom,
I am fine with both. though listening to music is a relaxation/stress management for me--it sometimes inspires me when i study my lessons. however, most of the time i study without music. i focus on what i am reading and reviewing.

Well its been productive for me---I always have some mild music playing at the background and it did help me to complete my lessons faster than usual.I developed this in the schooling---to be exact while doing my Maths and then i started implementing the same with all of my semester papers and as usual good grades .great day.

When I was studying before I am not disturb whenever there is music as my background, for real it let me inspire and keeps me awake. Whenever i am hearing my favorite song of course I will stop what i am doing and sing along, but after that I will continue what I am studying and I am very alert. Music makes me alive, music makes me happy while I am studying. It is the only thing that you can do together, studying and listening to music. I am very enjoy and relax when there is music while I am studying, mostly student are feel tension while studying while me with music I am very well rested. Well people are different, there are those cannot study when there are sounds everywhere. When I am studying and there is no sound, I get sleepy easily.

As for me personally I can not have anything on while I'm studying I must have peace and quite. It seems as if I can not concentrate at all with any type of distractions. My daughter is just the opposite. She can study, read etc. with the tv or radio on.

Straight up, it depends on the music. You have noticed, I am sure you have, because I have. That it is about a 60/40 split, with the 60 saying no music when it is important, and this is true to a very good degree.
Here is the thing, the human brain can only focus on one thing at time, yes I know you can do laundry/dishes/vacuuming/calm the child/cook dinner/ and mylot all at the same time. But you can only focus on one activity at time, when your attention is focused, other things can drift in, these are usually called "distractions" it takes your focus away for a second, hence the all the smoke in your kitchen right now as you are mylotting
If you are playing music with lyrics and a strong beat, chances are you are going to dance rather then study or do school work. I know a lot of kids, that "needed" the noise or they thought they couldn't study, most of them didn't do so well in school, the few that did, could really focus, they wouldn't even hear the music.
If you are playing mellow music, no lyrics, such as bach or mozart, what is commonly referred to as elevator music, it can help to some degree, studies have shown it to trigger certain areas of your brain...I don't really trust studies anymore, ever since I learned with enough money you can make a study say what ever you want it to, now I always want to know who pays for the study...Anyways, I am getting sidetracked, if it is music that won't really distract you, then it could help in some way.
Those are my thoughts, I pray they have added value to your life, sincerely and with appreciation.
Chysom Scott.

Music can help me to be productive on school works which does not involve much of thinking but more on doing like making a project or researching yet when it comes to school works like studying for an examination i would rather choose to be in an isolated place so that my mind will be focused on my study.

Studying with music? NO! Actually, it can be done. A lot of students prefer to study with background music because for them they can absorb more if there is a melody. But I am telling you that this is a BAD STUDY HABIT. Yes, we can do multitask just like the computer. But remember, our brain is not that powerful to focus on a lot of things than a computer processor. The habit will obviously divide your attention burning more glucose to your brain. That will surely make you tired faster. So, if you will be having long exams tomorrow, better skip the music first.
I may suggest for eating peanuts while studying. Its a good source of glucose, a kind of sugar which is a primarily food to our brains. Research shows that a single peanut can supply energy with two hours of mental work. Hope this will help you figure out.
Have a nice day!

Well sometimes it helps me work a little bit faster when I am finishing a project at work it also keeps me from falling asleep. but in a way I also find it distracting because I begin to get to into the music and forget the work so it depends on the situation but trying to listen to music and study for a test is not a good thing at all....
