1. North Korea with high altitude training - scientifically prove can produce more RBC, that mean oxygen transportation will more effective..
2. Ivory Coast - with a world class player that plays in a great team n great major league around the world.
3. inconsistent performance from favorite country like Argentina and France in qualification.
4. underdog surprising performance like south korea defeat itally.
5. David Beckham effect to USA soccer team?
7. home soil syndrome??? (play in growing up playground = weather)

I am looking forward to Ivory Coast making a real statement. They were distinctly unlucky in Germany and again at South Africa are in the midst of one of the toughest groups. But still I expect them to make a statement for South Africa. The other team that I think will slip under the radar and perform well will be Australia. They nearly took out Italy in the last world cup. Amongst the big teams, Argentina look the one most capable of causing upsets.

yup!!... with diego maradona strategies 'the best defend is offense' argentina could be the cousing upsets like yuo said.. but for australia without scolari touch i doubt it a little. ivory coast, come to world cup with complete set great player for all position. they deserve make a clumsy upset specially in group match

Australia is not my pick. But Ram anna, you have a good point there about Cote de Ivory. With Didier Drogba in the strike, I think the side will be pumped up to make a loud call this world cup in South Africa. It is the team that has an enormous amount of potential. Argentina, Ivory Coast, Germany are my picks. England is another standby.

The only reason why pick Australia is their never say die attitude and that one man Tim Cahill. He has an uncanny ability to score important goals especially from set pieces. But I can't wait for the World Cup to start.

Hi hokageiSan,
I do really hope that we can see a few upset in this year World Cup edition at South Africa. It is good for football and for the fans. It is too boring to watch the same team progress and win the World Cup.
I think the team that can make an upset is this World Cup edition is Ivory Coast. They were put together with Brazil, Portugal and ....... I believe they could progress for this group and can qualify for the knockout stage. They have a lot of good players in their squad like Didier Drogba, Micheal Essien and many more.

I think Ivory Coast will put up a good effort they have quaity players just they have been drawn in a very tricky group.

If North Korea can make it out of the group stages, it will be the biggest upset ever.
