Ice cold or warm???

I received a text message from a friend lately saying that drinking ice cold drinks after meals is not good as it could harden up the fats in the food you just taken in. It says that the solidified fat would get mixed with toxins in the stomach and get absorbed by the intestines that it could build up and could lead to colon cancer. So the message recommended drinking warm drinks or soup..
I googled for medical proofs or explanations of this and it lead me to snopes.com. Here's the link to the article: http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/coldwater.asp (It's not a referral link.)
So what do you think? Is it really true or not? Is it true or it's just a myth? Are there medical people here that could share some light on this.

my brother the doctor did tell me about this once..it's supposed to be almost true. why almost true? because if you've got tummy problems, or digestion problems, or intestinal problems, then maybe cold water wouldn't help much in relieving your condition. so maybe it does effect some people, while a healthy person will be ok with having a glass or two after meals.
but then i've always been a fan of room-temperature water. just plain water. no ice unless it's a hot day & i'm sweating after a round of b-ball..
just like an apple..8 glasses a day, keeps the doctor away...

Snopes says it's false. Well To be quite honest I've always heard cold water helps burn fat as it kind of jolts your system. Drinking water also helps to make you full faster during a meal.

I have not really had any complaints over what to drink when it comes to helping the food come down but if I eat something spicy or bitter and then drink something sweet or tangy I find it doesn't help at all.

the bottomline is what you eat first, if it is full of fat, even without water it will still affect the body.drinking hot soup with many fats in it will still solidify after its temperature lowered, look at beef disher when they are hot you could harldy see fats but as soon it cools down fats shows, the heat did not vanish the fat but rather mix it to liquid because of temperature.

that's why we filipinos are fond of eating rice every meal to even the fatty taste of dishes we have, i can't imagine eating bulalo without rice on its side.

All Filipinos wouldn't eat without rice. lol. It's our main food, but there are some parts of the Philippines who don't have much money to buy rice so they take other carbohydrates like corn, camote and others right?
Bulalo! yumm! It's addictive to have this Philippine dish although it's not good to have it much because of the fat it contains right?

no it is not true at all as this has been gone over before snopes says its a stupid lie. the assoc of American dietitians experimented and found that all drinks cold , ice cold, hot , warm, become the internal temperature of the esophagus on their way to your stomach, they are warmed to body temperature before they hit the contents of your stomach so they do not harden any oils , this is such crap and intelligent people should not swallow whole untruths until they research it for themseleves. Cold or ice water does not solify anything as it is warmed to body temperature before it reaches the stomach contents, it is a myth and has always been a myth just like touching a frog does not give you warts either.

I am not a doctor, but I think it did not have too much scientific base. There is temperature on the stomach. The cold water that we drank is not that cold, plus the stomach would have its own digesting function, thus the fat would be either absorbed or turn to another objects prior to be solid.
If drinking cold water after the meal would lead to the intestinal cancer, it is really horrible and a lot of people would suffer out of that, particularly in the tropics. For me, I seldom drink the cold water in my diet habits despite of the hot weather. After graduation, I seldom take outdoor exercise that I prefer to drink the hot water to perspire. It is a better way to perspire the toxins inside the body that daily diet brings.

Might not be true after all, like some have said. I think the best is to drink plain water, at room temperature. For what I know, cold drinks might upset the stomach.. (for some people) like cramps and all. So they make do with warm water or what they call plain water. It's a healthier choice anytime, rather than sugared drinks, or those sodas in cans and stuff like that.

Yeah, I researched on water therapy sometime ago and I've read that it really helps in cleansing the body, but you have to have a required quantity of water intake else you'll have water overdose or something, I forgot how it was called in the site where I read about the topic.

I've never heard of such a thing but I'd think it's false as Snopes says. If you think bout it I"m sure core temp is warm enough to keep things liquid form but stuff stcks to your insides no matter the temps. I think people just love yanking peoples chains and getting them all worried about stuff for nothing.

i could not believe drinking cold drinks after meal causes colon cancer. there are lots of things that cancer cells build up but i have a hard time thinking about the cold drinks. but i have a friend here who loves to eat beef and he said that the last time he had beef, especially the fatty parts, made him hospitalized. doctors found some clogging of his blood and said, it was due to the beef fats. but not that it was caused by the cold drinks he took after that meal.

Hey basqui, I don't believe this at all! I don't think it
matters what the temperature of the drink matters! Once it
gets into your body the temperature changes almost immediatey!
So, that in itself makes no sense! I wouldn't recommend drinking
anything too cold or too hot for other reasons, but not for
the reasons you stated!

dear basqui,
it is just a matter of what one prefers. as for me, i never like warm water unless it is with chocolate, or milk, or coffee or even tea. i crave for cold drink after being out in the sun for a few hours.
our bodies have that heat that would not make oil solidify and harden inside the stomach. and there are these gastric juices that we have which breaks them while food is in the stomach.
thing is, we avoid food with much oil. we know it is not healthy.
thank you for this discussion.

I don't know whether this is true or not. I know that when I was talking about drinks a while back there were a lot of people that say that they start out their day with a glass of warm water, but this isn't something for me. I've always drank my water cold and I will continue to drink it cold until someone is able to completely prove that this is wrong. I absolutely can't stand drinking warm water because I feel that it makes me more gassy.

I don't know what to say. I mean it is logical but herd to believe it. it might be true. anyway, I never drink cold, really cold water. it is not good for your teeth eighter. the very hot coffe, tea or soup is not good as well. better food/drink temperature, as far as I know, is roome temperature. you will never any kind of problems. sometimes I eat icecream, but very rare. I really think that this was a good information for you. bye...till next time

I think good health is dependent on the person and we cannot have one rule for everybody.
I have always drank a hot drink with a meal, and I have always felt more or less fine. I did have a heart attack about 4 years ago, but that was nothing to do with what I was eating, but a hereditary blood-clotting condition.
My wife though, doesn't like hot drinks with a meal and always drinks cold water. I would say that she is even healthier than I am and has far more energy and vitality.
So in my experience, there is no single rule for everybody as we are all so different. _Derek

Of course, that's the fact. It depends on the condition of each individual. You can't keep one from eating or drinking something but care for yourself the most. IF what you prefer is right or wrong be sure to read on its health benefits in order to be sure.

We hear some many conflicting views on what, when and how we should eat and drink. The thing is they are conflicting. I recall reading somewhere that a glass of cold water before meals was good for weight loss as it would prevent over eating. I don’t know...I just use my common sense when it comes to nutrition and weird and wonderful ways to prevent cancer. This particular study doesn’t sound right to me but I am no expert I guess...

What do you say!!!!! i drink ice cold water or coke every time after meals.I drink water normally in the ice cold way. If whatever you say is true , then its high time i stop drinking ice cold water after my meal. But most of my friends do that. I haven't heard of any stuff like this. Anyways your article shows some good proof and info on this. AI will take of my health from now. Thanks for the advice.
