Contaminating the swimming pool....

It's summer here, and the heat is just too unbearable sometimes so the best place to be is to hit some of the cool and refreshing resorts here in our province. Well yesterday, we went swimming in the pool when I felt like I needed to pass my gas. Getting out of the pool would take time, and it was already on its way so I pretended to swim a little distance away and there I released it. It caused bubbles.... Well, the question that I have in mind now is, did I contaminate the pool with bacteria for what I did?

Lol!!! I dont think so. I wonder how many people pee in the pool. Your little gas formed a bubble and didnt stay in the water. So toot away as long as you dont poot. When my kids and my sisters kids were still at home we used to get together and go swimming at the lakes. My sister used to get out of the lake to go pee. I would always laugh at her. I mean hey the fishs were probably doing more than that in the same water. Also it was a very big body of water. i dont think a little pee would make any difference.

Your mentioning Shrek made me smile. lol. Yeah, it probably doesn't matter if you pee in a lake or river or the sea. What's kinda uncomfortable is peeing in the pool. I mean, you gulp pool water. Lol.

@ rinzgca : I felt exactly like Shrek! Except that I wasn't green. @ both: I have gulped pool water too many times. By accident, that is. Believe me, swimming in public pools is just as risky as jumping into a swamp of crocodiles!

that's funny.. i think i have done that also... just kiddin.. of course not.. you just expelled methane gas which will go the the atmosphere and not contaminate the pool.. but urinating on a pool is a lot more different i think you have done that also.. :)

the gas will diffuse, but bacteria is not gas, so is it not possible for the germs to dive back into the water, when the bubbles burst? Just a thought!

Oh yes, that does make sense.

don't worry bacteria can die easily because of the surrounding.. they will die i think for just a minute.. because they can't live in a surrounding full of chlorinea nd also sunlight and heat can kill them.. so don't worry.. :) lol

hi theresaaiza no I do not think it contaminated the water as it probably rose out of the water any way. I bet the odds are other people have been caught the same way and had to do what comes naturally. so I think you did no harm. Now if you had peed and pooed that might have been different but gas probably rose out of the water and just dissipated anyway. so don't worry yourself needlessly.

Would be easier to make a 'bubble' bath if you put a capful of soap in the filter. Would probably last longer too, and no one would have to hold their breath.

What if we fill up all the people and everyone in there farted? Maybe that will definitely cause contamination!

Could you smell it when it reached the surface ?

I was planning to say that too but was afraid I might scare the responders off my post! But, yes, there was a funny smell when it reached the surface! AMAZING!

I couldn't seem to concentrate on letting it out if someone was nearby, so I had to swim away. I did it for my sake! Can't I be any more selfish?

Just as well you swan a distance away from others so

No, i don't think you would have contaminated the water with just a fart. Since it's just methane and technically doesn't contain bacteria. What does have bacteria on the other hand is stool. But then again, since there's chlorine, it doesn't really matter anymore although it is disgusting (the stool I mean), because chlorine will kill the bacteria.

I remember a prank before pulled on our teacher by our silly classmate. He placed the plastic "poo" on the table of the teacher. Seconds after she arrived, she let out a shriek! I don't know how the boy managed to avoid detention or punishment but somehow he did.:) I think everyone would all report to the management so there is a big chance they'll find out the poo is fake.

Ugh, though I know chlorine can be really powerful, I think seeing a poo in there still looks really deadly!

Exactly! Which led me to this thought: What if you wanted to be alone in the public pool but there's too much people. Do you think these people would leave if you placed one of those fake, yellow, plastic stools somewhere along the pool? lol.

it was just gas so no problem. but you don't know what the other people in the pool might have done already. ewwwwww!

Right, they may have done much worse! And here I am feeling guilty about a very small offense!

Gasses are also dissolvable in water. That is how fish "breathe," taking the oxygen out of the water. It will take a lot of gassy people to note a difference, I'm sure. Same thing with urination, though I wouldn't go into a very crowded pool. I think it would have to be a wet poof to put bacteria into the water, but if they use chlorine or salt, that should take care of it.

Yes, there was chlorine, but still I don't feel so secure about it!

I wouldn't worry about a little gas contaminating a public swimming pool. I'm sure it was heavily chlorinated.

Problem is if I wasn't the only one who has done it.

I hope not, the pool you swim in should have enough chemical load to overcome a little gas, reality shows that others are contributing more than that into the water. Now take a big mouth full and spit it out. blessings.

I'm no expert, but I would not think that would contaminate. Maybe it depends on if all of the bubbles popped? If young children swim in the same pool, I highly doubt that contamination from bubbles is much to worry about...

Well I know there are so many things much worse than just those "bubbles", but they did POP, cat? They did!

hahah well that is a good question but i don't believe that a fart would release any bacteria but if you pee in the pool that can spread alot of bad things to other people. i heard that you can get infections down there if your unlucky at a public pool

Though I know, that doesn't stop me. I'm such a pool lover. Well it depends on how dirty it has become.

Gah...I would of been out of the pool in an instant if I knew... I know that little fart couldn't have contaminated the pool by much but that's assuming it wasn't a wet one and that you weren't ill .

Well, I was gassy that day which is not really usual, so I guess in a way I was ill. Just not that bad. But I was pretty sure it was gas and nothing liquid ever got out along with it. LOL
